Section of South West Coast Path is made safer thanks to sponsors

A popular section of the South West Coast Path, around Ayrmer Cove in South Devon, which had become narrow due to erosion, has been widened thanks to the Great South West Walk and sponsorship from Parkdean Holidays. Erosion has been a recurring issue for the South West Coast Path with landslides on the coast being reported frequently. However the stretch from Arymer Cove to Westcombe Beach will now be safer for walkers to use thanks to work done as part of the South West Coast Path Team’s ‘Unlocking our Coastal Heritage’ project, which received funding from the Rural Development Programme...

Canal restoration ahead of schedule, says Devon County Council

Work on the restoration of the Grand Western Canal is ahead of schedule, Devon County Council has announced.

The scheme, which started in July, is reconstructing a section of the canal at Halberton which breached during flooding in November last year. The County Council says that repairs are progressing well thanks to the relatively dry recent weather.

Work so far has focussed on rebuilding the embankment and building up the bed of the canal towards its final profile, which is now a recognisable shape near the Swing bridge and the location of the breach itself. The area...

Research confirms Mediterranean diet is good for the mind

The first systematic review of related research confirms a positive impact on cognitive function, but an inconsistent effect on mild cognitive impairment.

Over recent years many pieces of research have identified a link between adherence to a Mediterranean diet and a lower risk of age-related disease such as dementia.

Until now there has been no systematic review of such research, where a number of studies regarding a Mediterranean diet and cognitive function are reviewed for consistencies, common trends and inconsistencies.

A team of researchers from the University...

Exeter City Council has been named as a good practice case study in Bill Grimsey’s review of the High Street.

The review, which is relased amidst a clash between Mr Grimsey and TV retail expert Mary Portas over the future of the High Street, recommends that more local authorities form strategy teams like Exeter City Council.

Cllr Rosie Denham, Lead Councillor for Economy and Culture, said: "In Exeter we have our eyes very much focussed on the future of our High Street and the City Centre in general. In fact, the High Street is probably in the strongest position it has been...

The final pieces of scaffolding will be removed from Exeter Cathedral’s West Front today, after a £300,000 stone conservation project.

The game was sealed in the final ten minutes when Anthony Stewart arrived at the back post to head in a cross from his defensive partner Sam Wood.

Under-18 prodigy Matt Jay had been handed squad number 27 for the tie, for his first involvement in the senior competitive setup. Meanwhile captain Danny...

I do not enjoy exercise classes!! As a doctor I am well aware that I ought to exercise more and spend far too much time in front of a computer or TV.

I even belong to a large and famous gym which offers many kinds of classes. On the rare occasions that I have made myself try one of the classes I am bored after five minutes and find myself looking at the clock and waiting for it to finish. I can’t bear the dreadful ear bashing music and the routines are too complicated.

Everyone else seems to be able to remember the steps and look good in their Lycra designer gym clothes. I...
