Conservation charity Buglife have published a new webpage packed with information about the false widow spider to allay growing fears over the danger of this slow moving arachnid.

The majority of British spiders could not bite you if they tried because their fangs are too small or weak to be able to penetrate human skin. Even if one of the larger spiders does manage to bite you, the symptoms are usually like a pin prick or milder than a wasp or bee sting and do not last long. Devon Community Foundation hosted their annual Volunteer of the Year awards at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in Exeter, honouring the hard work and achievements of the people contributing to voluntary and community groups in Devon. Local volunteer Hannah Fortune was recognised with the Safe & Well Volunteer of the Year Award, sponsored by the Mildmay-White Fund for her work with Devon Rape Crisis Service.

Margaret Lovell is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning modernist sculptor. Her works are distinguishable by their complex simplicity; the abstracted forms are both powerful and graceful; visually arresting.

She has been valued by the serious collector since first showing with Marjorie Parr in London in the sixties. This current exhibition at The Art Room will focus on a unique collection of sculpture, drawings and prints from 1956 to date, many of which have not been seen before.

The Art Room is open Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday 11am-5pm.

Prince George christened in private family ceremony

HRH Prince George, the three-month-old son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and third in line to the throne - has been christened today (Wednesday 23 October) in a private ceremony.

The Archbishop of Canterbury carried out the ceremony at the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace. The Queen and Prince Philip attended the low key service with other friends and relatives, including Prince Harry the Duchess' parents Carole and Michael Middleton and her siblings Pippa and James. Met Office issues warning as more heavy rain is forecast

The Met Office has issued another yellow warning for the South West as the forecast for the next few days continues to bring rain and the risk of localised flooding to the region.

The Met Office said: "Further heavy showers are likely through the rest of Tuesday and particularly overnight into Wednesday, when organised bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move northeastwards, accompanied by squally winds.

"The public should be aware of the risk of disruption, mainly due to localised flooding, but also where squally winds occur."
