Young people can be fostered for longer

The government has announced that children in care will be able to stay with foster families until they turn 21.

Young people in care will still be able stay with foster families after they turn 18, following a new legal duty for councils to provide support.

£40 million over the next three years has been set aside to help local authorities provide the required financial support to foster families.

As forecasters predict a freezing cold winter ahead two Devon charities have linked together to help those most in need. Hundreds of people across the county are faced with hardship and unable to heat their own homes – but the charities are offering a lifeline and they need support from local people. Online music service, Spotify has faced scrutiny by advertising watchdog over a promotional email containing offensive language. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld a complaint on a promotional email suggesting users listen to the Lily Allen song “F*** You”. The email read: "Have you heard this song by Lily Allen? Give it a try. F*** You". In a the ASA hearing Spotify claimed that the song, which was named by the artist, not Spotify, was not chosen to shock consumers or to drive traffic to their website by being controversial. Landlord fined £4,000 for safety issues

A landlord in Dawlish has been fined £4,000 for renting out an unsafe property.

Curtis Betteridge was prosecuted by Teignbridge District Council after ignoring warnings to make a flat on Iddesleigh terrace meet fire and safety regulations.

It is the first time Teignbridge has taken court action against a landlord.

The case was heard before South Devon Magistrates, sitting in Torquay, on Tuesday December 2. Mr Betteridge and the case has tried in his absence.

Exeter University doctor develops cancer detection app

Doctor Willie Hamilton from the University of Exeter, has designed a computer app for GP surgeries that is able to improve the detection of cancer symptoms in the early stages of the disease, potentially helping save thousands of lives.

The app costs £50 and is currently on trial at 160 GP surgeries nationwide.

It works by recording a patient's symptoms upon each doctor's visit. If, over various visits, the patient shows several otherwise harmless symptoms which together could be an early indicator of cancer, a warning will appear on the doctor's computer screen.

The Government’s chief legal advisor will in future issue advisory notices to Twitter and Facebook users to help prevent them committing a contempt of court.

The advice has previously only been issued to journalists on a ‘not for publication basis’ is designed to make to make sure a fair trial takes place will warn people not to comment on certain aspects of court cases.

The advice from the Attorney General, Dominic Grieve QC MP will be published over twitter and on the Government website, gov.uk.

Mobile phone network EE will bring 4G mobile broadband to Exeter before Christmas.

EE is the first mobile network to bring 4G to Exeter and will see customers get speeds up to five times faster than the current 3G network.
