Christmas comes early for young carers

Staff at local health insurer Exeter Family Friendly have been busy buying presents to give the young carers of the Mid Devon-based charity project “Kids Who Care” a special Christmas surprise.

The charity supports 230 young carers; offering advice and mentoring as well as the chance to get together with other young carers at club nights and fun days out for well-deserved respite.

Arctic 30 return from Russia

Five British members of the Arctic 30 are to return from Russia today after three months of imprisonment.

Three of those returning- Kieron Bryan, Iain Rogers and Alex Harris- are originally from Devon and were granted amnesty alongside several prominent political prisoners including members of the band Pussy Riot. Quiet Christmas for police according to Press Office

Devon and Cornwall Police have reported no incidents over the Christmas period.

It appears to have been a very quiet few days according to the force website, which is updated by the police press office.

No incidents were reported on Christmas Day and Boxing Day with the latest up until late this morning being Christmas Eve (see left).

By contrast, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue reported 10 incidents on Christmas Day and 20 on Boxing Day.

Kitchen fire on Powlesland road

The Fire Service received a call reporting an oven fire at the Powlesland Road, Alphington, Exeter

One fire appliance from Danes Castle Exeter and one fire appliance from Middlemoor Exeter attended.

A man was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene of the fire which was started from the grill pan of an electric oven.

The fire was out on the arrival of fire crews who inspected the premises to ensure it was safe.

Ambulance crews checked over the casualty on scene.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.

Child airlifted after M5 Crash

A child has been airlifted to Frenchay hospital in Bristol following an accident on the M5 near Tiverton.

The child was injured when the car he was travelling in left the slip road at junction 27 and overturned into a ditch.

Although hurt the child’s injuries were not life-threatening and no-one else in the vehicle was badly injured.

Devon and Somerset fire and Rescue confirmed that the car collided with the back of a heavy goods tanker before landing on its roof in the ditch.

The car had three children as passengers and all were assessed by ambulance crews...

Bethany has been found safe and well in Plymouth

Police have said they are “growing increasingly concerned” for a 13-year-old girl who has been missing since yesterday morning.

Bethany Gordon, 13, was last seen yesterday morning at Barnstaple Retail Park wearing a green three quarter length coat, grey leggings and black and white shoes.

Police believe she may have made her way to the Plymouth area where she has friends.

Officers have begun searches in Barnstaple and Plymouth and are now...
