The UK will become one of a small number of countries to forecast the weather in space.
A £4.6M investment in this innovative system by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) will help protect the technologies our day-to-day lives rely on.
Severe solar flares, space storms and solar wind can disrupt satellites, GPS, power grids and radio communications.
Space weather forecasts, running all day, every day from spring 2014, will allow government and businesses to take swift action to ensure services are maintained.

The Grecians, however, were let off early on as Karl Hawley saw his spot-kick saved by Artur Krysiak after Billy Bodin drew a foul just...
Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter is hopeful the injury sustained by prop Brett Sturgess in the last minute of Saturday’s Big Game 6 clash with Harlequins will not be too serious.
The loosehead was carted from the Twickenham turf with a serious-looking knee injury during his side’s 22-6 Aviva Premiership defeat.
Sturgess was assessed immediately on site at English Rugby HQ and whilst there was no fracture of any kind, Baxter will not know until later this week the full extent of the problem.
“It doesn’t look like he has broken anything,” said Baxter.
