£7m investment in Exeter guildhall revealed.

Plans have been revealed on a new £7 million investment to Exeter’s Guildhall Shopping Centre.

The plans mark the first large investment in the centre since it was first built in 1972 and will modernise business premises in the centre.

The refurbished premises will be outfitted with features attractive to modern retailers and restaurants.

Leading Exeter-based claims management company, EMCAS, has been included in a listing of ‘1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain’ by the London Stock Exchange Group. An Exeter-based deaf interpreter agency has expressed shock at the unidentified man, who was broadcast standing alongside world leaders including US President Barack Obama, making up his own signs during Nelson Mandela’s memorial service.

Carols on Exmouth Quay

Plans are being finalised for Exmouth Quay’s annual concert of traditional Christmas carols on Sunday December 15.

Exmouth Shanty Men, saxophonist Charlie Hearnshaw and the town concert band are among the guests at the event, which takes place outside the Peter Dixon Chandlery at 6pm.

Quay residents stage the concert each year with Christian Aid and in 2012 more than £500 was raised for the charity’s work among the world’s poorest people. This year the proceeds will be used to help tragic families involved in the typhoon in the Philippines.

Hundreds of committed fans braved the winter weather to welcome Luke Friend back home.

The atmosphere was electric outside the University of Exeter’s Great Hall as an army of “friendies” descended on his red carpet entrance.

The 17-year-old, X Factor star hugged lucky fans and signed autographs as he walked down the aisle before heading inside to start his exclusive homecoming gig.

The event was a sell-out with some fans queuing since 4am on Tuesday morning to get a ticket.

Ofsted release South West report

Ofsted has published its first ever report reviewing education standards in the South West.

The Annual Report 2012/13 for the South West finds that the proportion of good or outstanding primary and secondary schools in the region has increased. As a result, over 48,000 more pupils now benefit from a good or outstanding education than was the case 12 months ago.

Despite the improving picture, too many children and young people from poorer backgrounds do not do well enough. In 2012/13 there were 152,870 pupils eligible for free school meals (FSM). The pass rates for this...
