The UK barista championships held in Birmingham last weekend welcomed competitors from all over the UK where each entrant demonstrated their ‘barista’ skills to a panel of judges.

Steve Pearson from Devon Coffee, in Exeter’s Queen Street, battled against some of the best speciality coffee shops in the country and scored 490 points, placing him 14th on the leader board.

Exeter Uni tops teacher training list

The University of Exeter has been rated among the top three universities providing teaching training according to the ‘Good Teacher Training Guide’. The study published by the Centre for Education and Employment Research (CEER) at the University of Buckingham found that Exeter’s Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) course stood alongside regular top courses run by Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Insurers meet government for flood clear-up summit

Insurance leaders will meet with Government Ministers today to discuss the industry’s response to the recent floods in the South West and Thames Valley at a Downing Street summit today.

Ministers are likely to call on the industry to ensure that floods claims are processed as soon as possible.

The 64 volunteer riders from emergency couriers Devon Freewheelers were over the moon when one of TV’s Emergency Bikers agreed to become the charity’s first patron.

Paramedic biker for the West Midlands Ambulance Service Mark Hayes, a familiar face to viewers of the Channel 5 series, took the decision to endorse the charity after visiting its headquarters and riding out with some of the team.

Devon Guild of Craftsmen have been awarded over £136,000 to support a tour of their exhibition and community project Home Ground, which explores the link between crafts, local industry and English football clubs.

The leading contemporary crafts organisation based in Bovey Tracey was one of 11 successful projects announced as part of Arts Council England's Strategic touring programme funded by the National Lottery. Working in a local authority cemeteries department inspired Devon author Kate Vane’s new novel, Not the End.

Kate said, “The job made me think about our attitudes to death, particularly when someone died without friends and family and the local authority had to take charge of the funeral arrangements. Often they weren’t poor, or a loner, as people think. They had just outlived everyone who was close to them.”

Exeter’s leading kitchen and bathroom showroom has been awarded a perfect 10.

The highly respected Kitchens Bedrooms and Bathrooms magazine (KBB) recently carried out a secret shopper survey in the city and gave Sapphire Living Space top marks.
