Historian Dr Todd Gray has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List for his voluntary services to Devon heritage.
The investiture is at Buckingham Palace on Friday 14 March. For almost a century, University of Exeter historians have actively been involved in Devon based historical studies and societies, all of which survive on voluntary work. The University provided leadership on this active engagement in 1920 when the History department began a programme of Exeter studies and encouraged staff to run local history organisations.
An extra £140 million of road repair funding has been pledged by the Government this weekend to aid clear-ups following the severe winter storms.
The extra funding, announced by the Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin on Sunday (9 March), will see a further £103.5 million of funding spread across all UK local authorities while another £36.5 million will be targeted only on the worst hit areas.
While it is still uncertain how much of this funding will be made available to repair Devon’s 8,000 mile road network, the extra funding is unlikely to make much impact to the...
The Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel is hosting a ‘Pink Pig Racing’ event on Thursday 13 March to raise money for its charity of the year, Hospiscare. The event will see a line up of fluffy toy pigs race each other along a specially designed course to the finish line. Teams of five are invited to take part in the charity event. 70 people attended the last pig racing event in May 2013, raising over £450 for the charity.
So far the Hotel has raised more than £6500 for Hospiscare and is hoping to soon reach their target of £7500.
Had the recent storms and flooding been caused by a perceived external enemy – another country, a hostile organisation or terror group, there would have been political uproar. We would have seen civil anger against the perpetrators and the calling for violent retaliation. A massive propaganda campaign would have ensued against the provocateurs, and there would likely have been strong demands for a declaration of war. But climate change (which is the most likely explanation for increasingly extreme weather events) is not caused by any of ‘them’. It is not caused by an easily definable enemy...

Bicton Arena has announced Eric Winter will be the venue’s new course designer for novice and intermediate cross country courses. In his role, Eric will also mentor arena manager Helen West who will design all other courses at the venue, including BE 90 and 100 courses and the unaffiliated tracks. Explaining the change around in roles, Helen explained: “Primarily I am stepping up to course design alongside Eric to save the estate money. We will also give Matt Lynch, who is the equivalent of a clerk of the course, more responsibility. He is already a bronze level builder but he will be...
If at first you don’t succeed – try, try and try again. Well, in the case of the Exeter Chiefs it’s taken 12 attempts, but at last the Bath curse has been finally broken.
Rob Baxter’s side booked themselves a home date with Northampton Saints in next Sunday’s LV= Cup Final with a hard-fought 22-19 win against their Westcountry rivals.
Having come so close on numerous other occasions since 2010, this was finally the day when Devon’s finest rose to the occasion.
Indeed, not since 1978 had the Chiefs tasted success against their nearest and...

A goal deep, deep into stoppage time by Eliot Richards earned Exeter City a 2-2 draw at home against Dagenham & Redbridge.
The Grecians had gone ahead in the first half through Tom Nichols, but a fine strike by Luke Norris got the visitors on terms in the second period.
Dagenham went ahead through what appeared to be a soft penalty, as Medy Elito slotted in after Brian Saah was judged to have been fouled, by Richards rescued a point with virtually the last kick of the game.
