Around 800 businesses across East Devon can still benefit from a scheme offering rate relief of up to £1,000 for the next two years. But time is running out to sign up to the scheme.
The initiative, adopted by East Devon District Council, is designed to give local retail businesses of a rateable value of less than £50,000 a chance to compete on a more level playing field with internet retailers.
Businesses to benefit include shops, post offices, restaurants, cafes, pubs and garden centres.

Police investigating an armed robbery at a jewellers’ shop in Paignton are appealing for information. At around 4.45pm on Tuesday 22 April, three people entered the House of Diamonds, Torquay Road, dressed in hooded tops and overalls. They were allegedly armed with a baseball bat and a knife. Witnesses managed to detain one of the offenders whilst another two made off and got into a waiting car. Direct flights between London and Exeter are set to begin this October as part of a major expansion deal by locally-based airline Flybe. Three city-to-city flights will run from Exeter to London City Airport as part of a five year agreement with the capital airport.
