Hospiscare has paired up with local solicitors who are giving up their time for free, to offer people the chance to have a professionally written Will for free so that they can make a donation to charity instead.

There are 30 local solicitors taking part in Will Writing Fortnight between 12th and 23rd May, helping people to plan for the future. Around 50 people a year leave a gift to Hospiscare in their Will. Hospiscare relies on gifts in Wills to safeguard the care of its patients in the future.

When Nancy Harris from Exeter died in 2006 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour it was her husband David who, having never made a Will, faced the task of dividing her possessions.

David said: ‘’When Nancy was diagnosed, Hospiscare came to our aid providing residential care and organising home care so that Nancy could spend her last days here at home.”

When Nancy died, David decided it was time to write his own Will. As the published author of ‘The Art of Calligraphy’, David found a way to leave a special gift to Hospiscare as well as his family.

David said: “I wanted to look after my nearest and dearest, whilst also giving recognition to the love and care provided by Hospiscare."

“The answer was simple; divide my estate between my children while assigning the copyrights to Hospiscare in perpetuity.’’

“I realise this is not an option available to most people but my guess is that with a little creative thinking most people could both make a gift in their Will to Hospiscare and still give proper recognition in their Will for their family.”
