Man dies in Devon tractor accident

A man died when his tractor overturned after leaving a field.

Police, fire and ambulance services were called to the scene at Northmostown near Sidmouth yesterday afternoon (Monday May 19).

The tractor had been towing a trailer when it overturned just before 12:50pm. The male driver was trapped and despite the efforts of emergency crews died at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed.

Air quality specialist extends SLR’s Exeter office offering

Environmental firm, SLR Consulting, has welcomed air quality specialist, Morgan Fitzpatrick to its Exeter base in Polsloe Road.

Morgan, who was previously based in the firm’s Bradford on Avon office, is an Associate with 12 years’ experience of undertaking air quality and odour assessments. Exeter Foundation Awards honour top sports performers

Devon sports achievers were honoured at the Exeter Foundation Devon Sports Awards, in association with Active Devon on Friday night.

They included sportsmen and women, clubs, coaches and volunteers from all four corners of the county.

The event was hosted at Sandy Park, the home of LV= Cup winning Premiership rugby team the Exeter Chiefs.

The competition was open to those involved in sport throughout Devon and, unlike similar awards, all the profits will be donated to charity.

Communities to set restorative sanctions

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg has begun a consultation process which will see communities across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly set their own list of restorative sanctions for low level offences.

Mr Hogg is asking individuals and organisations across the peninsula to take part in the survey on a new Government initiative, the Community Remedy, which will give victims a say in how those who commit low level crime and antisocial behaviour are dealt with.

Women bishops legislation passed by diocesan synod

An overwhelming majority of Exeter's diocesan synod has voted to approve the new legislation to allow women to be become bishops.

There was only a short 30 minute debate, during which members of synod paused for a moment of silent reflection.

Prebendary Sam Philpott said there was no need for speeches but the "real agenda is to begin to imagine life beyond the legislation."

"We need to get on and be the Church, shining clear for the people of Devon," he said, to applause.

Body identified after six-year search

The body of a man found in a clay pit in Cornwall has been identified as that of man missing since 2007.

Mr Nicolas Prouse was reported missing from his home in St Dennis, Cornwall, on 30 November 2007. An extensive missing person enquiry was undertaken at the time but he was never located. No reason for his disappearance was ever established.

A member of the public contacted the police on 13 April 2014 after seeing the body of a man below the water line at Trelavour Pit in St Dennis.

The death has been treated as unexplained while police enquiries continue....

Funding boost for Cranbrook community efforts

Communities in Cranbrook will soon begin to feel the benefit of money from East Devon District Council and Devon County Council after Broadclyst Parish Council successfully bid for £4,000 from the Parishes Together Fund.

Broadclyst Parish Council has allocated another £1,500 to the fund, so there is £5,500 available.

The Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust is in line for a prestigious national award for its work to promote the highest standards of patient safety and care.

The Trust has been shortlisted four separate times for the Patient Safety and Care Awards 2014, led by flagship publications Nursing Times and the Health Service Journal.

Tricia Sail, 40, from Exeter, will be going that extra mile to raise funds for Fight for Sight, a charity close to her heart. On 24 May, Tricia, who was diagnosed with Uveitis in 2013, will be walking 100km from London to Brighton with friends for the main UK's charity that funds pioneering eye research to prevent sight loss and treat eye disease. The challenge will be extremely difficult as Tricia has lost the sight in her right eye and only has 20 per cent vision in her left. In what has certainly been a year to remember for Henry Slade, the Exeter Chiefs young gun insists his key aim moving forward is to just "keep his head down".
