With Exeter Central Library due to re-open to the public in a little over three weeks here’s a quick sneak peak at what to expect. The long-awaited library is expected to open on May 22 following a £4.2m revamp; updating the libraries facilities for a more modern service. The new building holds more than 60,000 books, CDs and DVDs on over a km of shelves while another 150,000 are available on request from the libraries reserve stack. More volunteer mentors needed to help unemployed start up new businesses

Volunteer business mentors will have helped 1,000 unemployed people across Devon and Cornwall to start their own businesses by this summer, according to Business Information Point (BIP). However, this target can only be reached if more volunteer business mentors step forward.

Bicton College’s Chiefs Rugby Academy competed in the British Colleges Elite Final against Bishop Burton College and won with a resounding 35 – 20 score today.

Devon woman dies on fundraising ride

A charity worker from Devon has tragically died in South America while raising money with a round the world cycling challenge. Sharon Bridgman, 38, is reported to have been killed instantly after being hit by a motorist in Bolivia on Saturday afternoon. The Exe Estuary Partnership is inviting members of the public to lend a hand with a litter pick in Exmouth on Saturday 10 May.

Meeting at the Imperial Recreation Ground slipway in Exmouth at 10am, volunteers who help with a couple of hours of litter picking will be able to enjoy a relaxing cruise on the estuary with free buffet, although places are limited.

Devon County Council has warmly welcomed the Government’s announcement today recommending approval for Assisted Area status to cover large areas of Devon up to 2020. This status establishes the areas of the UK where regional aid and enhanced levels of Government assistance will be available to support disadvantaged economies through the businesses within these.
