The Acoustica Festival Weekend

The annual Acoustica Festival is back again this year and it’s bigger than ever! From 12th-14th September the festival is taking over the city playing at venues around the city including The Phoenix Arts Centre, The Bike Shed Theatre and The Old Firehouse.

The festival will showcase genres such as Alt Folk, Folktronica and Americana which are the roots of Folk music. Students from the Academy of Music will perform also.

On the 11th September at the Globe Inn, Newtown, there will be a warm up event for the festival from 8pm which is FREE!

Record breaking results for Exeter School

Exeter School pupils, parents and staff are celebrating a record year for A Level results with an overall pass rate of 100% for the eleventh year in a row.

24% of all grades were A*, a record 66% of grades were either A* or A and a record 89% of all grades were A*, A or B.

41 pupils - almost half of Exeter School's Upper Sixth - achieved more than three A*/A grades this summer.

Among the high achievers, there were five who secured four A* grades each.

SW housing market ‘pauses for breath’

Demand for new homes in the South West fell in July, to the lowest level since October 2011, while the supply of new properties coming onto the market also decreased, according to the July RICS Residential Market Survey.

In the region, 7% more chartered surveyors saw a fall rather than rise in new buyer enquiries in July, with 16% more surveyors seeing a fall in new instructions – a decrease from a net balance of 0% last month.

New homes offer reduced heating bills

Construction of 20 new homes at three sites in Exeter is now well underway.

The accommodation at Bennett Square (Mincinglake) and Brookway (Whipton) is expected to be completed in spring 2015. Newport Road (Countess Wear) expected to be finished by summer 2015.

The new homes will be let to families in housing need. Three of the new houses will be built to full wheelchair accessible standards.

All of the homes are being built to the Passivhaus standard, meaning they will be cheaper to heat than a standard home and provide stable internal temperatures all year round...

Irishman Sexton goes on trial with Chiefs

Irishman Jerry Sexton says he is “excited” by the prospect of trying to earn himself a contract with Aviva Premiership club Exeter Chiefs.

The 21-year-old forward has been given until the end of November to prove his worth to head coach Rob Baxter, who is keen to bolster his second row options with skipper Dean Mumm currently sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Sexton – the younger brother of Ireland and British Lions fly-half Jonathan Sexton – settled into Devon earlier this week having seen a playing opportunity in France shudder to a halt due to contract problems.

Exeter student earns first class degree

A student from Exeter has earned a First Class Honours degree after completing her studies at the University of Worcester.

Morgaine Wilkinson, 23, will graduate at Worcester Cathedral in November.

Morgaine, a former pupil of St Luke’s Science and Sports College who studied Drama and Performance, said: “I’ve loved my three years at Worcester. Scores face losing homes every day in SW

Every day, 36 households in the South West are at risk of losing their home, new analysis from Shelter reveals.

The research, based on data recorded by the Ministry of Justice found that in the past year more than 13,200 homes in the South West are at risk of eviction or repossession, the equivalent of 36 every day.

It also identified the latest hotspots across the region where people are most likely to face losing their home, with Weymouth and Portland and Gloucester topping the list. Other hotspots in the region’s top ten included Bristol, Bournemouth and Plymouth....

New research commissioned by older people’s charity Anchor, has revealed the South West is a region in denial about ageing.

More South West residents are comfortable asking for a divorce than looking at the care options available in later life.

Despite it being a life changing decision, six out of ten people in the region (60%) have never thought about care options for later life and seven out of ten people (73%) who would trust someone else to make care decisions for them, haven’t talked about their care options with that person.
