Police enquiry offices changes announced

Devon and Cornwall Police is changing the way that it communicates with the public and will be making changes to its Police Enquiry Offices as part of a forcewide review into public contact. This change will see Police Enquiry Offices at 12 stations across the Force close on Friday, October 31, 2014. The changes will see Police Enquiry Offices at Plymouth Charles Cross, Torquay and Exeter Heavitree Road remain open for six days a week between 8am and 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 6pm on Saturday. National recognition for council team

East Devon District Council’s Revenues and Benefits team have received national recognition with two awards from a professional association.

The team are responsible for collecting council tax and for processing claims for council tax support, housing benefit and other assistance for people who may be struggling to pay their civic bills. Their work involves a great deal of contact with customers, many of whom are experiencing difficulty in making ends meet and so need to be treated with respect and sensitivity by council staff.

Hospiscare Sahara Trek 2014

A group of intrepid Devonians are about to embark on a journey of a lifetime in the Hospiscare Sahara Trek 2014.

Twenty two walkers will be leaving Exeter at midnight on November 5 heading for a London flight to Marrakech. They will trek across the Sahara to raise thousands of pounds for Hospiscare, the local Exeter based charity which every year helps more than 2,000 local people and their families living with a terminal illness.

Grand opening for GP surgery

Councillor Susan Griggs, the Mayor of Tiverton, attended an evening event to celebrate the completion of the new £1.8m extension to Clare House Surgery located in Newport Street, Tiverton.

The substantial building programme which has significantly increased the size of the surgery was overseen by lead consultants Haldons Limited and built by contractors Morgan Sindall.

More than 100 guests, including Clare House staff, patients and supporters attended the event, enjoying canapés and wine.

Crisis facing Devon NHS

The NHS in Devon has warned it might have to restrict certain treatments and operations and stop others completely because of the financial crisis it finds itself in.

The Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the new organisation set up to commission (buy) care on behalf of the public, is facing a £14.7 million deficit this year and the situation is only expected to get worse.

A charity art auction hosted by Michelmores LLP has raised a grand total of £10,000 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The ART4MACMILLAN event featured 50 original pieces donated by well-known artists from Devon, Cornwall and beyond, transforming Michelmores' Pynes Hill offices into a pop-up saleroom for the evening.

All 50 lots − many of which were inspired by iconic Westcountry locations, were successfully sold during the lively auction, conducted by fine art auctioneers and valuers Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood.

Flybe pilot arrested

A pilot working for Exeter-based airline Flybe was arrested on suspicion of being over the drink drive limit before take off after a fellow crew member raised the alarm.

He was due to fly from Newquay Airport to London Gatwick yesterday morning.

Passengers faced a five-hour delay as a resuilt of the incident.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: "A 48-year-old man from Crediton, Devon, was arrested on suspicion of being over the drink-drive limit."
