The Chairman of East Devon District Council has congratulated Feniton-born athlete Jo Pavey on her third place in the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year (SPOTY) competition.

Councillor Graham Godbeer made his comments at a meeting of the full council on Wednesday evening (17 December), when he announced that he has written to her with an invitation to a civic function in February 2015.

25% of SW residents splurge ‘on the card’

With the rise in interest-free credit cards and more South West residents looking to build their credit rating, it seems many are now looking to put purchases ‘on the card’.

A study by TopCashback.co.uk, released today, found that around half of South West residents believe that having a credit card has allowed them to live beyond their means, whilst 86 per cent say that it’s helped them to build a credit rating.

Around a quarter of South West residents are looking to credit cards as a way to spread the cost of spontaneous purchases and luxury goods.

New road sign to be introduced

A new road sign which has been authorised to be rolled out nationally will be used in Devon for the first time next month (January).

The sign, which suspends parking and introduces no waiting and no loading restrictions, has been designed to be used at large scale events and schemes involving work by utility companies. The new sign means that traffic cones are not required.

From Monday 5 January, South West Water will be carrying out water main works on Church Hill in Honiton, between Weatherill Road and Marlpits Lane. The sign will be used around the site of this work....

Exeter Chiefs can confirm today that Tom James is to head back to former club Cardiff Blues. The Welsh international, who joined the Chiefs during the summer of 2013 from the Blues, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal and will rejoin the region at the end of the current campaign. Reindeer trail success at Axe Estuary Wetlands

Santa’s helpers were out in force at the Axe Estuary Wetlands in Seaton last Sunday to track down a 'reindeer' and take part in Christmas crafts.

These included making fat ball Christmas gifts for wild birds and magic food to sprinkle in the garden and catch the eye of the team of reindeer pulling the sleigh.

The day was cold and crisp with sparkling sunshine and children and adults alike had great fun following the clues around the nature reserve to track down the missing reindeer – now happily all accounted for!

Exeter Chiefs saw their eight-game winning streak brought to an abrupt halt as Sale Sharks gave themselves and their fans an early Christmas present with this hard fought victory.

An image of seal on a pebbled beach glistening in the first hints of morning sun has scooped first prize in an RSPCA photography competition that focuses on young talent.

Owen Hearn, 16, from Stewkley, Leighton Buzzard, was named the overall winner of the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards 2014 (YPA14) for his atmospheric ‘Seal at Sunrise’ (pictured right) photograph taken on the Norfolk coastline on New Year’s Day during a morning out with his grandfather. Appeal to trace owners of dog found in Exeter

The RSPCA is trying to find out who owns a young dog who was found wandering in Exeter late in the afternoon of Thursday 11 December.

Holly, as the Staffordshire bull terrier has since been named by the RSPCA, was found on Burnthouse Lane near Ludwell Valley Fields. She followed a local dog walker home who took her in and contacted the local authority dog warden who took her to the RSPCA Little Valley Animal Shelter.

Devon veterans honoured with Russian medals

The Russian embassy has honoured over 50 World War Two veterans in Exeter today (Friday 19 December) for their part in transporting crucial supplies to Russia.

Counsellor of The Russian Embassy, Mr Sergey Nalobin, presented Ushakov medals to the men of the Arctic Convoys at a special ceremony at County Hall.

The medal is awarded to sailors who have displayed courage in the course of defending Russia or its interests.
