Riviera Line walks booklet launched

A new booklet detailing walks in and around the Riviera Line from Exeter to Paignton was launched at Dawlish Station this week.

The free booklet has been produced by the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership and brings together a selection of six self-guided walks, all starting from and ending at Riviera Line railway stations. Included are walks from Starcross, Dawlish Warren, Dawlish and Teignmouth stations.

It is part of the promotional campaign being run for the line by the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership as part of the EU Interreg “Citizens’ Rail” project.

Haiti, an aid crisis, five years on

Nearly five years ago, Haiti was struck with a massive 7.0 scale earthquake that killed up to 300,000, and left 1.5 million homeless. Today however, it remains a country riven with problems, despite the promises of the biggest humanitarian mobilization of a generation.

Final section of Exe Estuary Trail officially opened

An official opening ceremony has been held to mark the completion of the final stretch of the Exe Estuary Trail.

The final £1.6 million section of the trail, which links Turf Lock and Powderham, has seen the development of a three-metre wide off-road path and newly constructed bridge, near the existing level crossing at Powderham.

First full-time woman canon for Cathedral

Canon Anna Norman-Walker has become the first woman to work full-time as a Canon at Exeter Cathedral in its 900 year history.

Anna said she was excited about the opportunity to “strengthen the Cathedral’s presence in the heart of the city”.

Two Devon men found dead in Amsterdam hotel

Two Devon men have died in Amsterdam after after snorting what is believed to have been white heroin that was sold to them as cocaine.

The victims who were 20 and 21 years old were found in a hotel room on Tuesday.

The Foreign Office is liaising with Dutch authorities and is 'providing consular assistance to the family', a spokesman said.

Police spokesman Rob van der Veen said the bodies of the two men, both from England, were found next to traces of a white powder.

Police appeal to locate missing Devon man

Police in South Devon are appealing for help to locate a reported missing man.

Police are becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of Morley Petherick who has been missing from his home in Ashburton since Sunday.

Morley (pictured) who is aged 25 years is described as being a white man 5’7” in height, slim build, with dark short hair and facial stubble.

It is not known what he is wearing.

Police are carrying out local enquires in an effort to locate him and are appealing for help from the public.

Community nurses earn Queen's Nurse title

Two senior community nurses who oversee the Exeter area have been awarded the title of Queen’s Nurse.

Sarah Garnsworthy and Jane Watson are both senior nurses for community nursing for the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust.

They were given their new title by The Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) at its autumn awards ceremony at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, London.

The title reflects a commitment to high standards of patient care, learning and leadership in community nursing.
