Over 65s call for change on pavement parking

Pavement parking is a danger for older people and legislation should be clearer, says the results of a YouGov poll commissioned by Living Streets out today (09 January 2015).

Over half of UK adults aged 65 and over (51 per cent) have no idea whether or not parking on the pavement is illegal in their local area. As MP Martin Horwood’s ‘pavement parking bill’ receives its second reading in the House of Commons today, legislation needs to be standardised across the country says the pedestrian campaign charity.

From caves to cathedral in music and song

Young singers and musicians from across the region will raise rafters at Exeter Cathedral next week in a special concert of music and song inspired by Beer Quarry Caves.

At its heart is B Sharp Vocal Collective, a choir of more than 160 children and young people from Dorset and East Devon who have been working on original material with professional musicians lead by composer John K Miles.

Escalating bus subsidies to be capped

Council taxpayers in Devon are subsidising some bus trips by nearly £20 for every individual passenger, it has been revealed.

Now the county council is considering lowering caps on subsidies it will pay for bus journeys in Devon that would otherwise have been withdrawn by their commercial operators for being unprofitable.

The ceiling will depend on the type of service and bigger subsidies are proposed for public transport which provides the last link for communities with bigger towns and for services which people use to get to and from work.

A379 in Exeter reopens after police incident

The incident on the A379 has been resolved and the road has now reopened.

Police closed the road just before 9.30 this morning after receiving reports of a man standing on the “wrong” side of the railings on Baker Bridge, near the David Lloyd Leisure Centre.

An eyewitness said a man wearing a blue jacket and dark trousers could be seen standing on the ‘wrong’ side of the railings on the bridge.

Three people could clearly be seen talking to him.

The A379 in Exeter remains closed after police received reports of a man threatening to jump from Baker Bridge this morning.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are warning people not to leave e-cigarettes on charge for long periods.

Marc House, Community Safety Prevention Manager said: "Our advice for e-cigarettes is the same as for many smaller electrical appliances such as mobile phones and laptops - don’t be tempted to buy cheap unbranded chargers, don’t leave them to charge whilst you are out of the house or asleep and keep them well away from flammable materials.”
