A reprieve for threatened school lollipop patrols, continued support for vulnerable people on welfare and extra winter road gritting are part of a package of new spending approved by Devon County Council’s Cabinet today.
The threat to reduce the number of lollipop patrols at the county’s schools to save £100,000 had been one of the key issues through the budget consultation process.
But council leader John Hart said he had found the extra money to continue the same level of school crossing patrols for the coming year.
But he said the council would still need to talk...
These love birds at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park are doing what comes naturally, but there can be a lot of hard work behind the scenes to make sure rare species continue to breed.
Paignton Zoo curator of birds Jo Gregson holds the European Studbook for the wrinkled hornbill. “It’s my job to collect and collate information from other zoos on hatchings, matchings and dispatchings for the species and to make recommendations for pairings.” Which means that Jo gets to play cupid.
There are 140 European Studbooks; the system is run by the European Association of Zoo &...
Fancy climbing out a window to escape a date? In your average day, you see so many different faces yet no-one really talks to each other. Lots of single pringles are still waiting to find their perfect match; but human nature takes its toll with nerves kicking in on the first date and many of the UK unsure how to even start talking to someone.
So why do so many citizens bail out last-minute because we are just too scared to commit? In day-to-day life, everyone checks out some-one or other, whether it’s checking out their bum or even thinking the person is hot whilst drunk on the...

The Exeter City F.C. Supporters’ Trust is continuing to research the stories of City players who were killed in World War I.
In particular we would like help in contacting the families of four Grecians for whom we have no photographic or other image? They each had a strong Exeter/local area connection. They are:
George Thomas WHITE (d 1914)
John Addems WEBB (d 1915)
Frederick (Fred) Henry BAILEY (d 1916)
Edwin CLARK (d 1917)
In April it will be the 100th anniversary of John Webb's death. He enlisted with the Sherwood Foresters, having...
A recent scientific report has suggested that 4 out of 9 ‘planetary boundaries’ have been crossed*.
If pushed beyond safe limits, the Earth may become less hospitable for humankind to prosper. In this update on the boundaries, the authors found that climate change, the loss of biosphere integrity (through species extinction, and the loss of genetic and functional diversity), land-system change (for example deforestation), and biochemical flows (such as phosphorus and nitrogen from fertilisers) have passed beyond safe levels. The other five processes relate to ozone depletion, ocean...
