Since the beginning of last month the public has been voting in their many thousands for one of the West Country’s five capital cities to have their very own MONOPOLY for this year.
And Exeter has emerged triumphant, with the announcement being made today at Exeter’s Guildhall.
Devon’s capital city saw off the capitals of Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire in the poll.
Exeter commanded 34.3% of the vote ahead of Dorchester (26.1%), Taunton (15.3%); Trowbridge (14.7%) and Truro (9.6%).
Now the public will get to vote all over again over a one week...
Piles of wet wipes are littering our beaches as more people choose to use moist cloths to remove make-up, replace traditional toilet paper and apply fake tan. According to the latest beach litter data collected by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and published today in its Great British Beach Clean report, numbers of wet wipes found on beaches increased by over 50% in a single year!
The charity’s report, which also reveals a 6.4% rise in beach litter between 2013 and 2014, comes as the Government claims that no new action is needed on marine litter and claims it’s doing all it...

First-time homebuyer Tyrone France was very clear on his priorities when he and his wife recently moved into their new-build house in Exminster, Devon – the first addition had to be solar panels.
30-year-old Tyrone, who is an IT specialist for a media company, was intent on making their house a home that they will live in comfortably for the next 15 or 20 years, and for him energy security was a big part of that dream.
“Buying our first home was a very exciting step,” he said, “but we also want it to be our home for years to come. We decided that the earlier we could...
As announced in yesterday's (18 March) Budget statement, a large number of Exeter businesses can now receive up to £3,000 to improve their Broadband Connections.
The news comes as Exeter has been approved to join the Government Broadband Connection Vouchers Scheme from 1 April.
Most of the country can get superfast Broadband but some people might live or work in an area where it is not yet available.
Government and local authorities are investing £1.7bn to help bring superfast Broadband to over 95% of the UK by 2017. One of the initiatives to realise this aim is the...
A ban on motor-homes and camper-vans parking in EDDC car parks is being eased with effect from today (Thursday 19 March).
These vehicles may now park in the district council’s car parks during the daytime – but the ban on overnight parking of these vehicles remains in place.
East Devon District Council hopes that owners of these vehicles will choose to park in larger car parks for greater ease of access. But all district council car parks can now be used – although drivers of larger vans are reminded that if their vehicle takes up two car spaces, they must pay for two...
This was a challenging and thought provoking performance piece exploring confirmation-bias, our tendency to ignore evidence that does not fit our predefined views, and the writer/performer Chris Thorpe’s experiment to see if he could overcome his own bias.
He started the show with a bit of the science, using numbers to illustrate before moving on to Donald Rumsfeld’s notorious speech about “unknown, unknowns” – does this confirm to us how dumb the neocon presidency was or was it actually a brilliant encapsulation of the threats we face?

Three years after its launch, the Exeter PA Network has experienced strong growth, highlighting an appetite amongst PAs and support staff for training and development.
As the only group of its kind in the city, the Network fills the gap left by recession led training budget cuts – providing regular events with the specific aim of increasing opportunities for career development and networking.
The latest event, hosted by The Met Office, attracted 70 delegates, where PAs heard from Ian Caldecourt of training consultancy Hemsley Fraser, on how to maximise opportunities at...
