Over 350 SW renters a week at risk of losing homes

Research by the housing and homelessness charity Shelter has revealed that approximately 19,000 renters were put at risk of eviction in the last year - equivalent to over 350 renters per week.

The new analysis, which uses Ministry of Justice figures, showed that 1 in every 86 rented households in the South West have been put at risk of losing their home.

The charity also identified the hotspots in the region where renters are most likely to face losing their home.

New regional Exeter air routes welcomed

Aviation Minister Robert Goodwill has welcomed the new domestic routes that will start in 2016 from Newquay and Exeter airports.

The Chancellor announced in last week’s Spending Review that 11 successful bidders across the UK had been awarded support from the UK Government’s Regional Air Connectivity Fund. The new flights will offer fast journey times to Leeds-Bradford and Norwich.

Charity and Kew combine to preserve trees

Devon Wildlife Trust has spent this autumn conducting a very different kind of harvest.

The charity has been collecting seed from Devon’s ash, hawthorn, blackthorn, holly and other trees at some of its 49 nature reserves as part of a national project to aimed at protecting the UK’s woodlands. Devon Wildlife Trust is a partner in the UK National Tree Seed Project, which has been set up by Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank, and made possible with funding generated by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.

Family fulfil cancer patient's dying wish

The Exeter family of Sonny Hepburn, the skydiving Hospiscare patient, has fulfilled his dying wish.

Sonny, 71, continued skydiving despite being treated for cancer and was working towards achieving his skydiving C licence when he died in April. He was just four jumps away from his target of 200.

Now his family has completed the jumps and the licence is on the way.

Cultural heritage crucial to climate change debate

An exploration of the relationship between cultural heritage and climate change is being led by an expert from the University of Exeter at the world’s largest ever climate change talks.

David Harvey, Professor of Historical Cultural Geography at the University of Exeter, will argue that strategies on climate change must both learn from human history and look forward to consider tomorrow’s heritage, if they are to be successful.

Hundreds attend Exeter leisure complex exhibition

Over 400 people attended an exhibition to consider plans for Exeter’s proposed new Leisure Complex.

“We’re delighted with the response from the public,” said Council Leader Pete Edwards.

“The vast majority of those that attended the two-day exhibition at the Guildhall – 81.5% - said they support the principle of this project, and that’s good to hear.
