Starcross Primary School held a special launch last week for the publication of “The Seaside Train”, a book celebrating the unique and very scenic Riviera Line which links Exeter, Starcross, Newton Abbot and Paignton.
This book was inspired by the Citizens’ Rail train, a Class 153 single coach train which was given a special livery last year by Great Western Railway to celebrate the Citizens’ Rail project. This was an EU Interreg Project, led by the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership, which brought more frequent trains and station improvements to the Riviera Line and involved...
Work to upgrade more than 24,000 streetlights to LED lighting will continue across Devon next month (April).
The £10.2 million scheme, using Challenge Funding which Devon County Council received following a successful bid to the Department for Transport, will convert streetlights to lower wattage LED lighting, and around 5,000 columns will also be replaced as part of the project.
The replacement of streetlights, on mostly main (A and B) roads, got underway earlier this year in Barnstaple, where around 5,200 lights and 1,100 columns are being replaced, and Kingskerswell,...
There’s a special chance to learn about traditional lobster pot-making at Living Coasts on Friday April 1st.
Dave French is the fifth generation of his family to make crab and lobster pots from willow. He is one of only 10 people in the world who can make pots in this way. Clare Rugg, Operations Manager at Living Coasts, said: “It is wonderful to watch him at work – and it’s an important tradition.
The skill has been passed down through his family - each family has a design of their own. We have one of his pots on show as theming in our Local Coasts area.” The withy pots...
A world famous choir from Wales will be performing in Kenton next month.
The Pelenna Valley Male Voice Choir will be raising the roof at All Saints Church on Saturday April 9 (6:30pm) to raise money for local cancer charity FORCE.
The concert is being staged in memory of John Hunt, founder and former chairman of the Kenton Friends of FORCE group.
He loved singing and had close links with the choir for many years. At his funeral, Pelenna musical director Dr Michael Thomas offered to bring the choir back to Kenton.
The Exeter Pound have been running a crowdfund campaign over the last few weeks to prepare the way for the community currency to go digital.
The campaign will come to an end next Monday 4th April with all money raised going towards the systems needed to create the digital currency.
So far the ‘crowd’ have pledged more than £6,000 to the project and in return will receive unique rewards such as a locally designed t-shirts and shopping bags or even the ‘Exeter Pound Mystery Box’. Exeter launched its own paper currency in September 2015 and its reach has been growing ever...
Goals from Jake Taylor and Ollie Watkins made it four away wins on the spin and seven unbeaten for Exeter City as the Grecians battled to a 2-0 victory over Crawley Town at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.
Taylor’s goal in the twenty-eighth minute was the least that City had deserved after a rampant first-half display. The hosts came stronger in the second period with Bobby Olejnik called into action several times, but the Grecians weathered the storm before Watkins sealed the points with sixteen minutes remaining.
There were three changes to the City team that made it six...

Exeter Greens have accused the Labour run Exeter city council of 'spinning' recycling rates.
They say the council’s latest public messaging on recycling suggest a massive increase in the amount of waste being recycled to 49%, while a recent scrutiny committee report says recycling rates in the city have actually fallen in the last year to 34%.
The discrepancy is apparently due to a new way of measuring recycling rates, which Greens say is being used to mask a worsening situation.
Diana Moore, lead Green Party candidate for Exeter St David’s ward said: “This is pure...
