Annual public health report reveals Devon is facing challenges

This year’s Annual Public Health Report shows that Devon is facing many challenges such as population growth, ageing, poverty, housing quality and affordability.

In Devon the health of the public is generally very good, both in terms of national comparisons and with similar geographic areas, as indicated by the Devon Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA), there are areas of concern.

There was an all star local line up when Exeter Chiefs rugby player Tom Johnson launched his testimonial.

Hundreds of guests enjoyed the summer sunshine at Rockbeare Manor, which has recently undergone refurbishment.

Among those present were many of the current Chiefs squad including Jack Yeandle, Carl Rimmer, Haydn Thomas and Kai Horstman.

Sweeney keen to impress Exeter City

Pierce Sweeney has joined Exeter City on a trial basis and claims it was the club’s ambition that drew him to the Grecians. The 21 year old right back was released by Reading at the start of the summer and he is keen to impress during pre-season in the hope of securing a permanent deal with Exeter.

Action taken over bedtime fire deaths

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service has developed a bedtime safety campaign to raise the awareness of the importance of having a bedtime routine.

This was based on data from the previous year that established a number of fire deaths and injuries that were caused by people drinking, smoking and cooking late at night and them becoming distracted or falling asleep.

One part of the campaign focused on the most vulnerable, aged between 75 – 85 who are often alone when they die or are injured (not necessarily living alone).

Members of West Hill Women’s Group were entertained when Honiton auctioneer, Duncan Chilcott gave a talk on discovering antiques.

The thirty-strong group had been invited to bring along items that they were curious about for Duncan to discuss.

Amongst the items of interest was a handwritten journal from WW1 that had been passed down through the generations. The journal originally belonged to a soldier serving in South Africa, who decided to write it after he caught malaria and was hospitalised.

Council position on Sylvania Valley explained

A large piece of public open space land at Sylvania Valley is being auctioned by the Public Open Spaces Charitable Trust on 28 July. Residents are concerned that the land may not be available as public open space in the future and that the land might be developed.

When this estate was constructed in the 1970s, this land was required to be laid out as public open space. At the time, the developer would have been offered the opportunity of transferring it to the Council, together with a sum to cover the ongoing maintenance.

Exeter pound to launch new note

The Exeter Pound is launching a new £E4.50 note on the Quay on Saturday 30th July from 12 noon to mark the 450th anniversary of the Exeter Ship Canal.

The new note will arrive at the Quay by boat having travelled along the ship canal from the Double Locks carried by a Tudor merchant in the costume of 1566 when the ship canal first opened. The merchant will in fact be Martyn Goss, a Director of the Exeter Pound. The new note will be presented to the Lord Mayor of Exeter in the Custom House.

Chiefs help launch new golf course

The 'Twenty Sixteen' Golf Course at Exeter Golf and Country Club was officially opened on Monday 18th July with an afternoon of golf, fizz and Devon cream teas.
