Ride Lon-done: Geraldine completes 100-mile Brompton challenge

A former Exeter College student has completed her huge cycling challenge on a tiny bike in support of the BBC Media Action’s life-changing work around the world. Geraldine Sweetland, originally from Farway, cycled 100 miles on a folding Brompton bike as part of the Prudential RideLondon Surrey100 event on Sunday 31st July. She completed the course, which included climbing the infamously steep Leith Hill and lengthy Box Hill in Surrey, in seven hours, 54 minutes and 20 seconds. At one point she was clocked doing 23 mph. Exeter City Council has produced three new exciting themed walking trail leaflets for the city.

Fun and informative for all, there are three trails to choose from, the City Wall Trail; the Medieval Trail and the Woollen Trail.

With the help of a talented local illustrator, the history of Exeter has been brought to life with colourful characters from history who guide you along the routes.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service will be opening its doors to the public for a family open day on Sunday 7 August.

Everyone is welcome to come along to learn more about the work of firefighters and how they can make their homes safer.

The event is to held at Service Headquarters, near Exeter, on Sunday 7 August, 10am-4pm. Funds will be raised for Hospiscare Exmouth & Lympstone and the Fire Fighters Charity.

£1,000 community fund available for drama groups

Through its Well Built Community Fund, RGB Building Supplies is continuing its support of different groups in the region by donating £1,000 worth of building materials every other month.

So far in 2016 groups that support those with a disability, an outdoor project, a heritage scheme and a community centre have been beneficiaries, but now it’s time for amateur dramatic groups to tell the builders merchant how a donation of materials could help.

Traffic signal works to start at Countess Wear roundabout

Essential maintenance work on the traffic signals at Countess Wear roundabout in Exeter will start this week.

From early August preparatory works will take place to minimise the amount of time that the temporary traffic signals will need to be used.

From the middle of September old signals, poles and cabling will be replaced, along with cable ducting where required.

The scheme is scheduled to last for 9 weeks, with temporary traffic lights in place for three weeks starting in the middle of September to allow the main installation works to be completed.

The Exeter Pound has officially launched a new note.

With a flourish of his feathered hat the Tudor merchant (alias Exeter Pound Director Martyn Goss) handed the £E4.50 note to the Lord Mayor Cynthia Thompson with hopes that it would ‘bring new wealth’ to the city of Exeter.

The new note had arrived via the Exeter Canal whose 450th anniversary is celebrated this year and received by the Lord Mayor on the Quay.
