Chilcotts and the Big Picture

Auction lots come in all shapes and sizes, sometimes with an ambiguous history as Chilcotts Auctioneers discovered when a portrait was delivered to the Honiton Silver Street sale room.

The painting, an oil on canvas portrait of the Earl of Carrick in the Irish Peerage, measured 100 by 65 inches, with the frame adding another 6 inches to the already imposing size.

While these impressive measurements provided a ‘wow’ factor, the painting also created a minor mystery with regard to dating.

Topsham Library relocates to make way for bespoke new building

Topsham Library will temporarily relocate to the Nelson Close Community Centre in Topsham to make way for a brand new community hub.

The new ‘Community Hub’ is being built by Estuary League of Friends following a successful funding bid to the Big Lottery Fund and fundraising efforts by the charity, reaching a total of £1.95million. On completion, the hub will comprise of a day centre room, community café, exercise and fitness space, two treatment rooms, a laundry, meeting/training room, serviced offices and improved library facilities.

A Biosciences expert from the University of Exeter is celebrating after being honoured as one of an exclusive group of leading entrepreneurs, at a special ceremony at the House of Commons.

Edible bananas have been grown for the first time by the talented gardeners at the University of Exeter.

The mini versions of the popular fruit of the Musa acuminata ‘Dwarf Cavendish’ – normally only found in tropical countries - have been cultivated at a greenhouse at the University’s Streatham campus. They are of the same Cavendish variety found in shops but taste slightly sweeter.

Five Exeter building projects have been shortlisted in the 2017 Michelmores Property Awards which celebrate outstanding property and construction projects in Devon, Somerset, Bristol, Dorset and Cornwall, across ten categories.

Charity fundraiser promises to be lively event

Exeter solicitors Cartridges Law will be raising a glass to help raise much-needed funds for the charity Headway Devon.

The charity, which supports people affected by brain injury, is holding a wine-tasting quiz evening, thanks to sponsorship from Cartridges Law.
