RAMM has commissioned a new artwork from the internationally-acclaimed glass sculptor, Steffen Dam, for its major summer exhibition Sea life: Glimpses of the Wonderful.
Dam will produce an artwork consisting of around 16 ‘marine life’ jars containing plausible but fictitious organisms. The work will be inspired by RAMM’s extensive collection of marine specimens in Sladen’s Study. This gallery is dedicated to starfish-expert Percy Sladen and houses his echinoderm collection (starfish, sea urchins and their relatives). It is the largest and most comprehensive echinoderm collection in...

The Friends of Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) have added miniature by the renowned 19th-century Exeter miniaturist, James Leakey (1775-1865), to the city’s Fine Art collection.
The collection includes his drawings, portraits and landscapes but no miniatures; a significant gap for an artist whose reputation as a miniaturist extended beyond the borders of his Devonshire home. Research that revealed the gap was prompted by an enquiry by his descendants.
Cllr Rosie Denham, lead councillor for Economy said “This a great addition to the city’s...

A conservation project which aims to save one of Devon’s most endangered animals is now urgently seeking donations from the public so that it can continue its vital work.
The freshwater pearl mussel might not look as stunning as some wildlife but the conservation charity Devon Wildlife Trust describes it as a ‘remarkable animal’ and one that can have a positive impact for us all.
Freshwater pearl mussels filter bacteria and algae. So a large population helps to clean up our rivers for the benefit of other wildlife - and people.
To ensure the safety of people enjoying the Exe Estuary at the same time as protecting the rare and vulnerable wildlife, people are invited to have their say on a review of activity zones and codes of conduct in and around the Exe Estuary before the 28 April 2017.
People are being invited to share their views about the future use of this beautiful natural resource. The comments received will help to inform new voluntary exclusion zones and codes of conduct that will ensure people and wildlife continue to share and enjoy this special area for years to come.
