A new Devon-based sunglasses company launches this month and is already drawing attention for its purpose-driven business model. Bird Sunglasses is a unique, stylish and thoughtful eyewear collection, and for every purchase, they distribute a solar light to families in Malawi, Zambia and Uganda through their 'Share Your Sun' partnership with Solar Aid.

598 million people in Africa alone have no access to electricity, relying on expensive and dangerous alternatives to light their homes. Many use homemade kerosene lamps which are a poor light source; emit toxic black smoke and eat up...

In recent months Exeter Cathedral has been on a journey of self-evaluation and change. That process has raised some challenging issues, not least financial. While some progress has been achieved, there are still many challenges ahead.

In that context, and having reached the age of 65 last month, after considerable thought and reflection the Dean, the Very Rev Jonathan Draper, has announced that he will retire at the end of August this year. He and his wife Maggie are on leave this week, and on his return Jonathan will be on sabbatical.

He has been Dean for over five years...

Exeter Chiefs 24 Harlequins 7

London’s Calling for Exeter Chiefs as they booked a third successive final appearance in the Anglo-Welsh Cup with victory over Harlequins at Sandy Park.

In a dominant display from start to finish, Devon’s finest advanced to the capital in style, setting up a final showdown against Leicester Tigers courtesy of tries through Lachie Turner, Max Bodilly Julian Salvi and Sam Simmonds, whose younger brother Joe completed the scoring with two conversions.

Harlequins mustered a late consolation score through Calum Waters late on, but that was a rare bright spot on a day when the...

Chiefs side to face Harlequins

Ricky Pellow insists he and his Exeter Chiefs side are ‘ready for battle’ ahead of Sunday’s Anglo-Welsh Cup semi-final against Harlequins at Sandy Park (3pm).

Looking to reach a third successive final, Devon’s finest must first overcome their capital-based rivals, who themselves have the added incentive of knowing a victory this weekend would ensure they run out in the first showpiece final of the season on home soil a week later.

The Chiefs know from past experience how much of a carrot playing a final at your own home stadium can be - they won this very competition at...

The influential back-row forward, together with lock Jonny Hill, have both been handed new two-year contracts by the Premiership club that will extend their stay in Devon until at least the summer of 2019.

Baxter has spoken in recent weeks about his desire to tie down the long-term futures of a number of players within his first-team squad - and this latest news will be warmly welcomed not only by those in power at Sandy Park, but also by the wider Chiefs...

Exeter City fell to their first home defeat since November 2016 as goals from Seamus McCartan and Matty Pearson gave Accrington Stanley a 2-0 win at St James Park.

The visitors had the better of the opening half-hour of the match and played well on the counter-attack in the second half. However, the Grecians could take heart from a battling performance that saw them create numerous chances to get back into the match in the final half hour.

City made three changes to the starting line-up from last Saturday’s match at Hartlepool United. In came Luke Croll, Pierce Sweeney and...

Be Moor aware of new life on Dartmoor

The breeding season for moorland birds on Dartmoor coincides with the lambing season and, with the arrival of spring, the moorland will be full of new life, so it is particularly important for all of us to be Moor aware.

Many visitors and local people exercise their dogs when enjoying Dartmoor. Although a dog may not be actively chasing livestock, its presence can still cause disturbance. During the lambing and calving season, expecting ewes or cows are particularly vulnerable. A frightened animal may abort or abandon its young – a tragedy for the animal and a financial loss to the...

15/03/2017 - 7:30pm to 18/03/2017 - 7:30pm
Venue:
Bike Shed Theatre, Exeter

Leaving home for the first time is a step into the dark. If you’re leaving the care system, the reality hits even harder.

Leaving is a new play by Paddy Campbell (writer of Wet House, one of The Guardian’s Top Ten plays 2013) and created with Amy Golding who was recently at The Bike Shed Theatre with Preggers.

It tells the real stories of care leavers and their experiences at the pivotal moment when they leave care. It also gives voice to those working within the system from staff in children’s homes to MPs and policy makers.

Using the young people’s own words, an...
