People can gain a fascinating insight into the Exeter Blitz and how locals took refuge from the falling bombs in Exeter’s Underground Passages at a series of events next week. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Exeter Blitz of 1942. Although the first bombs fell on Exeter on 25 April 1942, it was not until a few days later on 4 May that the city was devastated by what has become known as the Exeter Blitz. To commemorate these events, Exeter’s Underground Passages & the Red Coat Guided Tours have planned a number of events running from Monday (1 May) until Sunday (7 May)....

David Doel headed the Rathbones CIC2* at Bicton Arena International horse Trials riding Gillian Jonas’ Shannondale Quest adding four showjumping penalties to his dressage score of 43.4.

More than 700 horse and rider combinations competed over the course of the three day competition where organisers’ hard work to produce good safe ground in light of the dry spell earned plenty of plaudits.

Organiser Helen West said: “The feedback has been incredible. After such a long dry spell we’ve had to put a lot of work in on the ground, in addition to our longer term plan which was put...

Exeter’s Marathon Man

Peter Hawes is celebrating after completing this year’s London Marathon in support of local charity Rainbow Living.

Peter ran the gruelling 26 miles in a fantastic time of 3 hours and 50 minutes and has so far raised £1,020 for the Exeter-based charity.

Peter said: “When I got to 50 I said I’d apply to run the London Marathon, knowing for sure that no one ever got in first time…how wrong I was! I’ve run many half marathons but never two back to back – but feel grateful to have had the opportunity to take part in such a special and unique event. It was a privilege to run for...

An overnight lane closure and temporary traffic signals will be in place on Bridge Road in Exeter tonight (Wednesday 26 April) and tomorrow evening (Thursday 27 April).

On both evenings, the signals will be in use from 8.30pm and up to 5.30am the following morning. The lane closure is needed to enable safe working during the installation of sockets for new traffic signals north of the Bascule Bridge, which will eventually replace the existing pedestrian crossing at the canal.

The next weekend closure of Bridge Road is planned to take place from 10pm on Friday 5 May until...

Ryley Walker

Event Date:
28/05/2017 - 7:30pm
Venue:
Exeter Phoenix

Ryley Walker is the reincarnation of the true American guitar player. That’s as much a testament to his roving, rambling ways, or the fact that his Guild D-35 guitar has endured a few stints in the pawnshop. The prolific guitarist is on the road with his band for a tour that is sure to showcase the self-deprecating and subtle humor of his lyrics as much as his stellar fingerpicking and the heavy musicianship of his band.

His second album Primrose Green, emerged to critical hosannas from the likes of NPR, Village Voice, Uncut, and Mojo – in the process, earning admiration of...
