Exeter Exhibition challenges west country's landscape art tradition
16 January 2026 – Exeter - A groundbreaking art exhibition opening this month aims to shake up the Southwest's centuries-old love affair with picturesque seascapes and rural idylls.
'Not A Pretty Landscape', running January 31st and February 1st, 2026 at Kaleider Studios in Exeter, brings together 15 artists aiming to shake up the Southwest's centuries-old love affair with picturesque seascapes and rural idylls. The exhibition offers portraits, contemporary pieces, and unconventional landscapes that reflect a modern West Country often overlooked in favour of ‘pretty landscapes’. Whilst these have their place, curator Claire Le Day argues it's time for a change.
"The West Country is more than picturesque estuaries and rolling hills," says Le Day. "This exhibition is about creating space for work that doesn't fit the expected mould. This is about art for all. Art that challenges and surprises. Art that reflects the diverse creative voices actually living and working here today."
The exhibition takes inspiration from rebellious group shows of the past, including the Impressionists' early exhibitions and the ‘Rejects’ show; curated by Art Friend Gallery with rejected pieces from the RA’s Summer Exhibition. All artists are invited to be present throughout the weekend and retain 100% of their sales, a stark departure from the traditional gallery commission model.
Featured artists include Olivia Palmer, whose practice centres on capturing "not pretty" landscapes, and Jo Beer, an exceptional portrait artist. Many artists will be present throughout the weekend, giving visitors direct access to purchase work and discuss their practice.
At a time when art offers vital space for reflection, conversation, and connection in an increasingly digital world, Not A Pretty Landscape champions creative integrity over commercial predictability. Original works will be available alongside prints and cards for smaller budgets.
