Exeter School of Samba inject the rhythms of Brazil into John Lewis's summer event

Exeter School of Samba put on a magnificent display of sizzling samba beats outside John Lewis on Thursday 13 June in celebration of the store's summer customer event. Run by music graduate and drum-kit teacher Scott Craig, who uses Brazilian-made instruments to teach the traditional Brazilian rhythms characteristic of the Baterias (Drum School) of Rio and Sao Paulo, the Exeter School of Samba provides an opportunity for anyone with an interest in percussion, music and/or rhythmic movement to develop their musical skill and abilities within the framework of this vital, traditional art form. They rehearse weekly in Heavitree and Scott holds hour-long samba workshops on Saturdays at the Exeter Phoenix.

The philosophy of Exeter School of Samba is  'Make Yourself Heard', which is about finding your voice on all sorts of levels. And they were certainly making themselves heard yesterday evening as they performed a powerful series of complex and exacting traditional rhythms, thrilling the gathering audience outside John Lewis. The band had been asked to perform for a special customer event for a special summer event hosted by John Lewis. Even the sun was invigorated out of the clouds to make an welcome return after the recent rain showers.

These photos do not do the band justice, as you simply have to experience it to feel the full benefit of the performance, so make sure you catch up with them at an event in the near future and get carried along with the samba rhythms of Brazil in Exeter...
