A Devon couple have invented two new seagull deterrents which humanely prevent gulls from landing on roof tops.

The two new products, the Defender® Roof Ridge Bird Spike and the Defender® Chimney Pot Bird Spike, were devised by husband and wife team David and Kursty Jones. The products attach around chimney pots or directly to roof ridges and stop seagulls landing without hurting them.

The growing nuisance value of noisy seagulls is a well-recognised social problem and, until now, opinions have differed on how to handle the problem.

The birds can often be seen congregating on the highest points of properties which is almost always the roof ridge or chimney pot. These high up spots provide the perfect 360° vantage point to survey their territory and swoop down if they spot a bag of chips, ice-cream or someone putting out a bin bag.

Inventor David Jones said “The shrieking noise and droppings blocking gutters can be extremely upsetting for property owners with many calling for the nuisance birds to be shot but I believe we must learn to live alongside these beautiful creatures. Our two new inventions are humane, they enable the property owner to simply move the gulls on without hurting them. When Seagulls are prevented from landing on the ridges or chimney pots, they often abandon the property all together – no foothold, no landing, no seagull.”

Both products have protruding blunt pins that fan out to prevent the Gulls from landing without injury. The Defender® Chimney Pot Spikes are held in place by a metal strap which is wrapped around the top of the pot just like a belt around a waist. The Defender® Roof Ridge Bird Spikes are simply glued along the top of the ridge using an external adhesive.

David and Kursty own and manage Newton Abbot based Jones and Son where they already manufacture a wide range of seagull and pigeon anti roosting systems supplying individual households and the leisure industry as well as pest control companies, building material suppliers, the renewable sector, local authorities, the roofing industry, sign makers, individual handymen and window cleaners.

Kursty Jones added: “Our Defender® gull deterrents are easy to install but we also provide a great deal of customer support including advice on selecting the right product, a comprehensive pigeon and seagull deterrent guide, full installation advice and product warranties.”

The Defender® Roof Ridge Bird Spikes and the Defender® Chimney Pot Strap Bird Spike are available from www.birdspikesonline.co.uk and on Amazon.  The new products will be officially launched at the Garden Press Event on Wednesday 27th February at the Business Design Centre, Islington London.
