More overnight closures on Bridge Road in Exeter as opening delayed

Devon County Council is disappointed to have to confirm that the proposed Bridge Road opening date, for the week commencing Monday 31 July, will not be met.

This further inconvenience on one of Exeter’s busiest road is regrettable, but the contractor has a full-time seven days a week presence on site. Complex structural engineering work is continuing in areas under the Swing Bridge and on the outside of Countess Wear Bridge, where the most technically challenging part of the scheme is taking place on the cantilevered pedestrian and cycle bridge, but this activity may not be apparent as it is out of sight of road users.

More night-time road closures are taking place over the next two weeks to ensure four lanes are opened as soon as possible.

Overnight closures will be in place from 8:30pm to 5:30am from Monday (31 July) to, and including, Thursday 3 August. Night-time work next week will include final sections of kerbing and installation of drainage gullies between the bascule bridge and Countess Wear Flood Relief culvert. There will also be the installation of a pedestrian guardrail at Matford roundabout and lighting cabling over Countess Wear Bridge, as well as work on safety barriers and signs throughout the site.

Further overnight closures will take place during the week commencing Monday 7 August for resurfacing work, but the number of evenings required is yet to be confirmed.

The diversion route during the closures will be signed via Topsham Road, Alphington Road, Marsh Barton and the A379. Details of the diversion route are available here.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to access Bridge Road during the closures via temporary paths. They are advised to take care and follow the site signage and any instructions from site staff.
