If you’ve got a big family or you are frequently taking passengers in your car, you want to make sure that the car you choose is going to be comfortable. Also, if you need good boot space to store equipment or luggage in on a regular basis, then you will be looking for a vehicle that allows you to do this with the lowest amount of hassle.

SUVs and 4x4s are a great option based on these requirements, but they are fast becoming popular based on their design and not just for the practicalities. If you are thinking about getting your next vehicle then here are some of the best SUVs and 4x4s that are on the market right now:

Peugeot 3008 – What a stunning vehicle this is. The interior wouldn’t seem out of place in some of the higher end luxury cars, and yet it is fairly reasonably priced for what you get. While the Peugeot 3008 isn’t 4WD, it is still a great car regarding all round performance. You can opt for the speedier 2.0 BlueHDi 180 GT or go for the more fuel-efficient option with the 1.6 BlueHDi Active that runs at 70.6 mpg.

Ford Kuga – It seems like most manufacturers are now dipping their toes into the SUV market and the Ford Kuga is one of the best around. Perfect for getting the family comfortably seated but also offers the fast acceleration that comes with the turbocharge. These vehicles are becoming a very popular choice for family cars, but they are also pretty stylish at the same time.

Renault Kadjar – This highly rated SUV can be picked up for a relatively low price when you compare it to some of its close rivals. You also have a huge selection of engine sizes, ranging from 1.2-litre petrol to 1.6-litre diesel. Whichever size you go for, you will appreciate the affordability and the amount of passenger and boot space of the Renault Kadjar.

Mercedes GLC – Right up at the other end of the price spectrum is the Mercedes GLC, which is a highly stylish and powerful car. However, you are unlikely to find one for much less than £40,000 making it a less affordable option. Of course, at this price it has everything that you would expect from the first class manufacturer Mercedes - sleek interior, 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds, extensive technology and top of the range safety features.

When you’re looking to buy an SUV, you should always take a wide range of factors into account. While the cost of the vehicle will be the main consideration for many buyers, the long-term running costs of SUVs are a significant point to factor in. If you’re buying a car because is £3,000 cheaper than a similar model but it will cost you twice as much to run over the next three years, then that is false economy. Also, second hand cars from used car dealerships are just as good and much more cost effective. Do your maths and work out the long-term finances before you opt for the higher running costs associated with many SUVs.
