Bishop Robert welcomes women bishop vote
The Bishop of Exeter has welcomed the news that women will be able to become bishops.
Bishop Robert said there was "relief all round" after the General Synod voted to approve women bishops.
Attending his first ever General Synod he said there was joy after the vote - but not triumphalism.
An atmosphere of respect for others was present throughout, he said. General Synod approved the legislation with a convincing majority.
He said: “I am very pleased that General Synod has approved the legislation and that the Church of England can now move forward together on this issue.
"I look forward to the day when the first woman bishop is appointed. I pray today for those for whom our decision is a difficult one, as well as for those for whom it brings great joy; that we may grow, worship and move on together.”
The Church of England has agreed that women may become bishops next year, breaking with centuries of tradition. The decision comes more than 20 years after women were first allowed to become priests.
