The Day We Played Brazil: ready for kick-off
As the 2014 World Cup comes to a close and Europe prepares to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War, it's time to celebrate Exeter's special place in history.
The Day We Played Brazil celebrates the 100th anniversary of the football match between Exeter City and the Brazil national team - the first-ever game played by Brazil. The play is based on the extraordinary true story of Exeter City Football Club’s tour to South America in 1914.
Under the expert direction of Nick Stimson, Polly Agg-Manning and David Lockwood, a cast of around 100 local people will tell the stories of the players and their wives, sweethearts and families back home.
There will be plenty of music, tears and laughter along the way as well as some great footballing moments.
It’s a story of adventure and excitement, both on and off the pitch, which will take the audience through the highs and lows of the 100 years since the outbreak of the Great War.
The musical play opens at Exeter Northcott Theatre on Wednesday 16 July and runs until Saturday 2 August.
To tie in with the play, Exeter City Football Club's unique history is celebrated in an exhibition at the theatre, which commemorates their match against the Brasileiros XI in June 1914.
The official exhibition is accompanied by a stunning display of artwork created by young people from the Clyst Vale Learning Community and is on view until Saturday 2 August. You can view the exhibition between 10am and 6pm Monday to Saturday and on Sunday an hour before the show starts.
