A new collection of works by one of the world’s most respected comic book artists will be on display in Exeter from this weekend.

Alex Ross, who is widely considered to be one of the most pre-eminent and well-respected comic book artists in the history of the field, has produced six new signed limited edition prints featuring DC Comics superheroes Superman and Batman which will be on display at Castle Galleries, Exeter from Saturday 28th June.

As a three year old, Alex was regularly illustrating and encouraged by his artist mother and admiring his ministerial father’s moral framework, he pursued his passion for drawing and quickly fell in love with the notion of superheroes.

It was these formative years and exposure to a range of comic book illustrators, styles and contemporary artists that have nurtured, developed and shaped Ross’s natural talent such that he is now one of the most respected and admired comic book artists in the world, with more than 1,000 pages and covers to his name.

Working almost exclusively in watercolour gouache, Ross strives to make his work “fully believable”. Praised for his life-like human depictions, his rendering style, attention to detail and composition, Ross is often referred to as the “Norman Rockwell of comics” – bringing the characters he draws to life, and imbuing them with a new energy and spirit.

Ross’s inimitable style, his expert use of light and shadow, the dramatic composition and command of figural motion all make art by Alex Ross some of the most sought after across the comic book and fine art fields.

Rita Jones, Castle Galleries, Exeter’s gallery manager, said: “Alex Ross is respected, admired and sought after and he has established himself in history as one of the foremost image makers in comic book culture and indeed artistry itself. We couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to share these limited edition prints with the people of Exeter.”

Signed limited edition prints are available to buy and start from £695. For more information please visit Castle Galleries, Exeter, telephone 01392 425 242 or visit www.castlegalleries.com.
