£11,800 up for grabs for sports in Broadclyst
Broadclyst parish residents are being asked by East Devon District Council and Broadclyst Parish Council to decide how to spend £11,800 available for sports in the area.
The Broadclyst Parish Council area includes the areas of Westwood, Budlake, Westclyst, Broadclyst Station, Cranbrook, and Blackhorse.
Broadclyst Parish Council and East Devon District Council are taking their voting stall to the Broadclyst Fun Day on Broadclyst playing fields on Saturday 28 June between 11am and 4pm. Go along and cast your vote.
The money has come from recent housing developments (Section 106 money) in the parish. It is now up to residents to decide how the money is used.
An appeal for ideas in the spring this year produced a range of suggestions from Broadclyst residents, organisations, voluntary and community groups. The parish council has worked with EDDC to figure out which of the proposals are eligible for the money and can actually happen.
Those that were eligible for funding are the ideas residents will get to choose between. These are:
- An outdoor gym. This would be several pieces of traditional gym equipment suitable for outdoor use.
- Improving the batting conditions and safety of cricket players at Broadclyst Cricket Club by installing sightscreens so they can see the ball more easily.
- Improving the outside practice net area at Broadclyst Cricket Club by levelling out the current uneven surface that makes batting practice dangerous.
- Creating a spectator area and scoring area next to the pitch at Broadclyst Cricket Club.
- Putting two full sized football goals into the recreation field in Broadclyst. These will create a full sized pitch in the football season and will be moved to create a kickabout area the rest of the year.
The proposals that get the most votes will happen.
Residents of any age can vote. EDDC will be making sure that the final vote is representative of the actual population of the whole parish and all age groups. This may mean further voting events need to take place to allow more residents of certain ages or locations to vote.
Councillor Iain Chubb, EDDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We are committed to making sure that local people have their say about where money from developments in their parish gets spent, and are one of the few local authorities that do so. This is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Broadclyst to really make a difference by deciding which new sports facilities they get. I encourage them all to go and vote.”
Councillor Chris Pepper, Chairman of Broadclyst Parish Council, said: “This is an excellent opportunity to improve sports facilities in the parish and the response to the consultation has given rise to many deserving projects. Local people have more say today than ever before; we urge you all to come along and vote, to help make Broadclyst parish an even better place to live, work and keep fit!”
