London: Hundreds protest in solidarity with Kurdish hunger strikers

(NewsPoint) –More than one hundred people disrupted roads in and around Westminster on Tuesday in solidarity with the 700 Kurdish prisoners on hunger strike in over 50 different prisons.

Among those on hunger strike are several leaders of the chief Kurdish party, the Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP). They are accused of ties to the outlawed rebel Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has for decades sought autonomy for the Kurds.

Bristol Chambers fundraise for medical charity

St John’s Chambers, based in Victoria Street, Bristol, and the largest Set in the South West with over 80 barristers, hosted a ball in aid of their ‘Charity of the Year’ Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA) which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Home Office bans marches in Walthamstow to stop EDL demo

The Home Office confirmed on Thursday that any marches in Walthamstow on Saturday had been banned, as they granted the request made by the Metropolitan Police to prevent a potentially troublesome demonstration by the English Defence League.

Policing Minister Damian Green said:

"Having carefully considered the legal tests and balanced rights to protest against the need to ensure local communities and property are protected, I have given my consent to a ban on all marches in Waltham Forest and three nearby boroughs for a 30-day period."

Knitwear warehouse fire in Leicester

A 'huge' fire was reported in Leicester on Thursday, initial reports suggest that the blaze is on Birstall Street, and is affecting a knitwear factory or warehouse.

Locals have reportedly been advised to close windows as the fire service tackle the blaze. Six fire engines are at the scene.

It is currently thought that the fire started in a shisha cafe.

Kevin Carroll, prolific English Defence League member, and leader Tommy Robinson's right-hand man, will still be allowed to stand in elections for the Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) despite being arrested on Saturday.

Torridge and West Devon MP Geoffrey Cox visited Tavistock yesterday to help raise awareness of the dangers of flash flooding, part of the Environment Agency’s nationwide flood awareness and action campaign.
