RMT warns of skills shortage threat to high-speed rail plans

Rail union RMT warned today that a looming shortage of skilled staff, driven by a failure to invest in training and apprenticeships and the dash to sub out key work to agencies and contractors, will threaten the timetables for future rail projects including the High Speed proposals unveiled this week.

Huge wildlife haven to be created at Meeth

A vast wildlife haven is to be created at the former Meeth Quarry, a 150-hectare site recently purchased by the Devon Wildlife Trust thanks to funding from Viridor Credits Environmental Company and generous individual donors. Police concerned for welfare of 87-year-old Plymouth man

Police are concerned about the welfare of a missing man from Efford in Plymouth.

Peter Campion, aged 87, was last seen on Saturday 26th January 2013 at his home address in Efford in Plymouth. However, he has not been seen since Saturday and may not be in possession of his medication.

He is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, with blue eyes, grey short hair and is usually clean shaven. He is thought to be wearing a suit or blazer with a trilby hat.

He is known to frequent hospitals across the South West and may have given a different name.

Groups that help victims of illegal money lenders are being offered the chance to apply for a share of £3,000.

The Home Office illegal money lending team, based in Birmingham, wants organisations in Plymouth to bid for cash to support ideas that promote its work.

The family of toddler Shaun Ryleigh Vane, also known as Shaun Ryleigh O'Neill, found dead in his home in the Champernowne area of Modbury on Saturday 19th January has paid tribute to the two-year-old.

British pig farmers are challenging food manufacturers, retailers and caterers to give a public commitment that they are not selling illegally produced meat from farms that are flouting new European welfare legislation outlawing the prolonged confinement of sows in individual cages, known as “stalls”.

They have set up a website Wall-of-Fame-and-Shame which will list companies that have pledged to source imported pork products only from farms that are operating legally.

42-year-old man dies in A38 Parkway collision

A 42-year-old man, who was involved in a two vehicle Road Traffic Collision at 0548hrs this morning (Tuesday 22nd January 2013), has died of his injuries at Derriford Hospital. His next of kin have been informed.

The incident occured on the A38 Parkway, Eastbound between the Manadon off slip and Forder Valley on slip. The two vehicles involved in the collision were a Ford Fiesta and a Toyota Avensis. At the time of the collision the road surface was icy, following a recent hail storm.

Body recovered from Tamar confirmed as Jordan Cobb

The body of ferry jumper Jordan Cobb, 16, which was recovered from the River Tamar last Wednesday, has only just been formally identified at an inquest. Jordan was with friends when he jumped off the Torpoint Ferry, seemingly due to a £100 bet. However, an extensive search was carried out when he failed to resurface. A police investigation into his death is ongoing, the coroner's office said.
