Exeter Chiefs chairman says new American owners will bring ‘razzmatazz’ to rugby union

Exeter Chiefs chairman Tony Rowe believes that the club’s impending takeover by an American consortium could transform the Gallagher Premiership.

The billionaire owners of English Premier League club Bournemouth have agreed a deal for the club, subject to the membership’s approval at an extraordinary general meeting on May 7.

If the deal is ratified, Exeter Chiefs will become the latest Premiership team alongside Newcastle and Bath to secure major new investment.

Preview: Exeter City FC v Morecambe

After the heartbreak of a last-gasp defeat to local rivals Bristol Rovers last weekend, it’s back on the horse for City this week and a home fixture against Morecambe.

The Shrimps arrive in Devon on a bit of a dry run themselves.

A 1-1 draw at home against Wycombe Wanderers last weekend took them to four games without a victory on the bounce for the first time this season, and similarly to City there is an air of importance in trying to get back into the play-off places that they occupied in the early months.

Part of that good patch that the Shrimps had early in the...

Rimmer expects Euro test

Prop Carl Rimmer believes Exeter Chiefs will face a much different animal when they tackle Cardiff Blues in their final Heineken Cup game of the season at the Arms Park tomorrow (3.40pm).

Having produced arguably their best half of rugby this season against the Welsh region back in October when they won 44-29, the Chiefs head to the Welsh capital this weekend not only looking to finish their European campaign on a high, but also aiming to rediscover their winning formula.

Eight defeats in nine games is hardly the statistic Rob Baxter would want attached to his side, but...

Devon sports awards: nominations open

The organisers of Devon's not for profit sports awards today reminded contenders that nominations are now open.

The Exeter Daily has joined forces with Active Devon and the Exeter Foundation to launch a county-wide sports awards event to promote all that is best about local sport.

The competition is open to those involved in sport throughout Devon and, unlike similar awards, all profit will be donated to charity.

The Exeter Foundation Devon Sports Awards, in association with Active Devon, will once again be hosted at Sandy Park, the home of Premiership rugby team...

Chiefs side to face Cardiff Blues

Rob Baxter wants his Exeter Chiefs side to wrap up their Heineken Cup campaign in style when they travel to Cardiff Blues in tomorrow's final Pool Two fixture at the Arms Park (3.40pm). With European qualification hopes of any kind all but extinguished with last weekend's 15-10 home loss against Glasgow Warriors, the Chiefs are still determined to prove their worth in European Rugby's top cup competition and record a notable double over the star-studded Blues. At Sandy Park in October, Baxter's men produced a devastating first 40 minutes to blow aside the Welsh region. Not only was the all...

Having been given his first-ever taste of Heineken Cup action last weekend, Luke Cowan-Dickie is hoping for more European exposure on Saturday when the Exeter Chiefs tackle Cardiff Blues at the Arms Park (3.40pm).

The young Cornishman featured for just over an hour during the narrow 15-10 defeat against visiting Glasgow Warriors and impressed many with his on-field display.

Back on the pitch following a season which has been hampered by a knee injury sustained in the pre-season friendly at Scarlets back in August, the talented 20-year-old says he is clearly keen to make up...

When it comes to horse racing, there is no doubt that the long-standing favourite for the fans is the Grand National. Known as ‘the world’s greatest steeplechase,’ the Grand National is run over 4 miles 3 ½ furlongs, almost two circuits of the famous Aintree racecourse, and with competitors jumping 30 fences along the way. Some of these fences are among the most famous in racing, including Becher’s Brook, Canal Turn, and The Chair.

The event is always extremely popular and figures estimate that around nine million viewers tuned into the 2013 event in the United Kingdom, along with...

City suffer stopage time heartbreak

Report: Bristol Rovers 2 Exeter City 1

Exeter City fell to a stoppage-time winner at the hands of Bristol Rovers, as the Pirates triumphed 2-1 at the Memorial Stadium.

The Grecians took a lead midway through the first period when Lee Brown mistakenly looped the ball into his own net, but barely a minute had passed when Rovers were back level as O’Toole made no mistake from the spot.

Despite chances at either end after the break, the game appeared to be tailing out all-square as neither side could burst the net again.

But O’Toole was alive deep into stoppage...

Chiefs Heineken Cup hopes are over

Exeter Chiefs 10 Glasgow Warriors 15

Having started their Heineken Cup campaign in sparkling fashion against Cardiff Blues back in October, the European escapades of Rob Baxter’s Exeter Chiefs side have rapidly lost their fizz ever since.

Sadly this latest loss to visiting Glasgow Warriors not only enabled the visiting Scotsmen to claim a third victory of the season over their Devon hosts, but at the same extinguished any semblance of hope the Chiefs had of advancing to European Rugby’s latter stages.

Having led 10-0 thanks to a converted Fetu’u Vainikolo try and a...

Exeter Chiefs will have a new look to their line-up as they prepare to resume Heineken Cup action at home to Glasgow Warriors tomorrow (3pm).

Just days after slipping to a narrow 19-16 defeat to London Wasps in the Aviva Premiership, head coach Rob Baxter has shuffled his pack as the Devon club look to keep alive their European dreams for another week at least.

Just four players - Tom Johnson, Henry Slade and Luke Arscott - remain in the starting line-up from that which took to the field from the outset at Adams Park last Sunday.

However, it shows the array of...
