Lavelle’s Silver Thorn too strong in Exeter feature

The Emma Lavelle-trained Silver Thorn won the feature Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, making virtually all the running to score by two lengths from co-favourite El Granjero at Exeter yesterday, where the sun shone on a beautiful day at Haldon Hill.

The grey had won his previous start at Doncaster in December, with his trainer reporting that he was progressing well. Lavelle said: “He’s still learning and he only ever really does as much as he needs to, which is great as he’ll keep improving. We’re very pleased with how he’s handled the ground today, which means he’ll go on...

Exeter City 0 Grimsby Town 0

Exeter City picked up a deserved point in their match with Grimsby Town as a focused and determined defensive performance saw the match end goalless.

In truth, the Grecians were unfortunate not to come away from the match with all three points as they dominated proceedings but were just unable to find the back of the net despite some very good chances. City had two efforts cleared off the line and hit the crossbar with an effort from Reuben Reid.

However, the clean sheet will give the defence, which is still missing two first-choice centre-halves, loads of confidence as...

Exeter Chiefs 27 Gloucester 27

Damian Welch’s last-gasp try snatched a dramatic draw for Exeter Chiefs in an enthralling derby with Gloucester at Sandy Park.

With less than a minute remaining, Gloucester’s hopes of a second Aviva Premiership victory of the season were dashed when the Chiefs mauled their way over in the left-hand corner to tie the scores at 27-27.

Even then Rob Baxter’s side could have won it at the death, but the normally deadly Gareth Steenson was unable to land the tricky conversion from wide on the touchline.

Following a disappointing 15-6 defeat at the hands of Bath Rugby...

Exeter City breaking new ground with 'corker of a pitch'

The installation of a 3G pitch at Exeter City’s Cliff Hill Training Ground is well under way thanks to work from NPS, Sportfields and Desso Sports.

The start-of-the-art pitch will be built to the same size as the playing field at St James Park using a contemporary cork infill surface and is set to be completed by the 17th of December.

It will benefit the club greatly as it will enable the first team to train effectively during the winter months and also be a facility that Exeter City’s Academy, Football in the Community charity and the Ladies team will be able to use all...

Chiefs side to face Northampton Saints

Rob Baxter says it’s vital his Exeter Chiefs side look to build on the momentum they have generated in recent weeks when they travel to Northampton Saints in Round Five of the Aviva Premiership tomorrow night (7:45pm). Having recovered from opening losses to Wasps and Saracens, the mood at Sandy Park has changed considerably in the past fortnight after the Chiefs collected maximum hauls from their last two outings against Harlequins and Bristol. Those victories have helped to lift the Devonians into fifth spot, much to the satisfaction of Baxter who is hopeful his players can continue...

If you went anywhere near Stoke Woods on Saturday, you might have seen a lot of cyclists - it was the day of Exeter Wheelers Cycling Club's annual Hill Climb Festival. Sponsored by The Bike Shed, the day featured three separate races on Pennsylvania Road. This 1.2-mile hill has been where Exeter Wheelers have staged their hill climb for many years. For the past two years, the race has benefited from being staged on a closed road: not only does this encourage more riders and spectators to come along, but it means that riders of all ages can pit their bodies against the testing hill in...

Exeter City's home struggles continue

Two goals from Jon Stead sent Exeter City to a 2-0 defeat at home to Notts County.

City made one change to the side that started the win over Stevenage on Tuesday night, with Jordan Moore-Taylor serving a one-match ban for the red card he picked up in that game.

Lee Holmes, who scored as a second-half substitute in that game, was promoted to the starting line-up. Notts County named former Grecian Richard Duffy in their starting XI.

It was County’s top scorer Stead who put the visitors in front after three minutes. Alex Rodman took advantage of a slip from Luke Croll...

Exeter City won their third away game of the season at Stevenage with a battling 10-man performance.

The Grecians were dealt a blow midway through the first half when captain Jordan Moore-Taylor was shown a straight red card, but they put in an energetic and resolute performance to win 2-0 thanks to second-half strikes from Lee Holmes and Ollie Watkins.

City were forced to make two changes to the starting line-up from the game against Plymouth as Joel Grant and Ryan Harley both dropped out through injury. They were replaced by Craig Woodman and Reuben Reid.
