Italian international Varney settles in Devon with new contract

Exeter Chiefs and Italian international scrum-half Stephen Varney has signed a new contract with the club, kicking off an exciting start to the second half of Chiefs’ 2025/26 campaign.

Now an integral part of the game plan for both club and country, Varney has enjoyed an impressive start to his Chiefs career playing in eight out of 13 games so far this season.

Varney said: “I’m delighted to be re-signing with Chiefs. Although I’ve only been here for this season, it’s been a place I’ve really enjoyed from day one.

“The group of players, the staff, and the...

Rob Baxter has challenged his Exeter Chiefs side to build on last week’s away win at Newcastle Falcons with an equally strong display against visiting Worcester Warriors in the Aviva Premiership tomorrow (4:30pm).

The Chiefs returned to winning ways in the top flight with a powerful display up in the North East, not only collecting their first league win since September, but also accruing all five points thanks to Will Chudley’s late try against his former club.

This weekend the Devonians will be looking to continue their upturn in form against the Warriors, who have won...

Why football fans should overlook their prejudices towards the lower end of English football

Nothing is as irritating in football than ignorance and it comes from all angles relentlessly. If you consider the FA Cup as a prime example; fans, pundits, experts and bookmakers alike always write off the chances of the teams from the lower leagues and yet they are proven wrong time after time.

The most recent example of a lower league side upsetting the form guide has to be, at the time, League Two, Bradford City making it to the 2013 League Cup final against Swansea City. The Bantams saw off three Premier League sides on the way to the final (Wigan, Arsenal and Aston Villa) to...

Solo, Siryl Allan, Frankie Doodle, Midge and Tom Parker were ridden by professional jockeys Noel Fehily, Aiden Coleman, Daryl Jacob, Sean Bowen, Tom Bellamy and James Best who urged them down the two-furlong stretch in front of their appreciative audience.

Midge, last year’s winner, was sent off the evens favourite and with a flying start under Noel Fehily...

Devoto looks to build on Falcons win

Ollie Devoto insists Exeter Chiefs must use their victory at Newcastle Falcons as the springboard to continue climbing up the Aviva Premiership table. Rob Baxter’s side claimed their first top flight win since late September when they triumphed 32-19 at Kingston Park last Friday. Summer signing Devoto set the ball rolling for the visitors, scoring his maiden try for the Chiefs inside the opening few minutes, before team-mates Thomas Waldrom, James Short and Will Chudley followed him over the whitewash. It was a much-needed victory for the Devonians, who will now be looking to build on the...

Tis unhappy with officials

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale said he felt his side were hard done to on Saturday as a dubious offside flag cost them at Carlisle United.

The Grecians fell to a 3-2 loss at Brunton Park with goals from Shaun Miller, in the 89th minute, and Charlie Wyke, in the seventh minute of stoppage time, giving the Cumbrians all three points.

However, City had a glorious chance to take all three points when the scores were level at 2-2. Carlisle had set up in a 2-4-4 formation at this point as they looked for a stoppage time winner.

And their gung-ho approach almost cost...

Newcastle Falcons 19 Exeter Chiefs 32

Will Chudley marked his return to former club Newcastle Falcons by claiming the bonus point try as Exeter Chiefs returned to winning ways at Kingston Park.

The scrum-half sniped over two minutes from time to put the icing on the cake for Rob Baxter’s side, who added earlier tries through Ollie Devoto, Thomas Waldrom and James Short.

Skipper Gareth Steenson weighed in with the remainder of the points to ensure Exeter of their third league win of the season, a result which also lifted them back into the top four for 24 hours at least.

Newcastle who had come into the...

Rob Baxter says the time has come for his side to put their foot down and ‘accelerate’ their way through this season’s Aviva Premiership campaign.

After a somewhat mixed start for last season’s beaten finalists, Exeter Chiefs resume their top-flight programme tomorrow evening when they make the long trip to Newcastle Falcons (8pm).

Buoyed by last weekend’s convincing 62-25 win over Cardiff Blues in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, Baxter is hoping the feel-good factor of that ten-try victory will ensure his side arrive in the North East with a spring in their step.

“This is the...

Williams expects response from Chiefs

Harry Williams says he and his Exeter Chiefs team-mates will use the heartache of their last-gasp defeat to Bath as a positive ahead of their return to Aviva Premiership action tomorrow night at Newcastle Falcons (8pm).

The Devon club will make their longest domestic trek of the season looking to banish the 13-10 loss to their local rivals to the history books.

Semesa Rokoduguni’s converted try, seven minutes into added on time, condemned the Chiefs to a fourth league loss of the season – and has left them in seventh place ahead of their trip to Kingston Park.
