Major disruption after rail line was closed

Rail travellers faced major disruption this morning after the line between Exeter and Taunton was closed due to a gas leak.

The alarm was raised at 5.14 am after alarms began sounding at Swallofield tank farm, Station Road, Wellington,.

On attendance the first crew requested support as it was confirmed gas was leaking from one of the LPG tanks on the tank farm.

One appliance from Wellington, one appliance from Taunton, one from Wiveliscombe along with the incident copmmand unit from Wiveliscombe attended. Supervisory officers and hazardous materials officers also attended.

The line was reopened for a while but closed again after a second leak was discovered. However, it was reopened for the second time shortly after 8.30am.

Fire control received a call to alarms sounding at the address, however on attendance of the crew they requested the full attendance for this site as it was confirmed gas was leaking from one of the LPG tanks on the tank farm.

One appliance from Wellington, one appliance from Taunton, one from Wiveliscombe along with the incident copmmand unit from Wiveliscombe attended. Supervisory officers and hazardous materials officers also attended. 

05:14 - Crews requested Police to attend to place a cordon around the area, shutting off station road to pedestrians and vehicle access, crews also requested to put a full stop on all rail traffic on the line in the area.

05:21 Crews confirmed that the gas leak had been isolated, however there had been a large leak in the area.

05:36 Crews at work in risk area with two breathing apparatus, one gas detector and also one safety jet was laid out.

06:20 Crews have identified the fault, and had isolated all leaks. Fire service operations have now completed.

Crews used 2 breathing apparatus, 1 covering jet and a gas detector to deal with the incident.
