Storm Frank has been making itself felt in Devon today with heavy rain and winds reaching speeds of more than 50mph battering the county.

Forecasters say that the downfalls will last throughout the day with the strong gusts abating by 3pm

The old A30 Rockbeare Straight is impassable due to floods and there is flooding on Station Road in Broadclyst. Police advise motorists to seek alternative routes.

More than 3.5 million homes and businesses have now been reached by the Government’s nationwide rollout of superfast broadband, figures published yesterday (Sunday 27 December 2015) reveal.

Access restrictions at Exmouth Community Hospital

Access to and from Exmouth Community Hospital will be restricted for several days from Monday 11 January due to essential work to replace a main gas pipe.

During this period, patients and visitors are being asked to allow extra time for parking or make alternative travel arrangements.

The work is scheduled to be completed by Wednesday 20 January.

The Met Office has issued two severe weather warnings as strong winds and heavy rain set to batter Devon

Stormy conditions are expected to hit the region tonight (TUESDAY), lasting well into tomorrow.

The Exeter-based agency's chief forecaster said: “A cold front will move east across western parts of the UK during Tuesday night and Wednesday, with an associated strong, moist southwesterly airflow. Rainfall accumulations through this period are expected to be widely 20-40mm, with 60mm or more over some higher ground.”

Exeter home severely damaged by fire

A house in the Beacon Heath area of Exeter was severely damaged by fire last night (Monday 28 December).

Fire crews were called to the property in Merlin Crescent at 6.36pm.

One crew from Danes Castle and one crew from Middlemoor attended.

A spokesperson for Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said: “On arrival the crews confirmed that the first floor bedroom was well alight.

“They got to work using two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one safety jet and a positive pressure ventilation fan.”

RSPCA appeal for dog abandoned on Christmas Eve

RSPCA staff are trying to trace the owners who abandoned this dog (nicknamed Pudding) in Plymouth on Christmas Eve.

The rescued dog, whose coat was so matted and overgrown that he couldn’t even see, has been nicknamed Pudding by RSPCA inspector Sarah Morris who arrived at Rendle Street, in Plymouth, where he had been discovered tied up and left out in the cold and pouring rain.

His coat was in such a disgusting state that inspector Morris couldn’t even tell what type of dog he was.

Disruption warning at Lympstone car park

Lympstone residents who park their vehicles at Underhill Car Park are being warned that essential works to a nearby pedestrian footbridge next month will mean fewer parking spaces for up to 12 weeks.

Contractors on behalf of the Environment Agency will start work to replace the footbridge across the Watton Brook at the car park on Monday January 11. The bridge is in a poor condition and is being replaced with a new one.

One of the contractor’s first tasks will be to create a temporary bridge to maintain pedestrian access throughout the works.
