Disruption warning at Lympstone car park

Lympstone residents who park their vehicles at Underhill Car Park are being warned that essential works to a nearby pedestrian footbridge next month will mean fewer parking spaces for up to 12 weeks.

Contractors on behalf of the Environment Agency will start work to replace the footbridge across the Watton Brook at the car park on Monday January 11. The bridge is in a poor condition and is being replaced with a new one.

One of the contractor’s first tasks will be to create a temporary bridge to maintain pedestrian access throughout the works. 

However, this means that up to 15 of the 84 car parking spaces will be taken up by the work during the 12-week contract period and residents – some of whom are car park permit holders – are being warned that car parking spaces may not be as easily available.

Andrew Ennis, East Devon District Council’s Service lead for Environmental Health and Car Parks, apologised to the public for the inconvenience.

He said: “We are told by the Environment Agency that the work needs to be carried out urgently for public safety and it is unavoidable.

"We are doing everything we can to minimize disruption in the car park. Information boards will be displayed in the car park over the coming weeks and cars will be leafleted to ensure that everyone know what is happening.”
