Guitar indie-pop band Pale Waves and Mercury-nominated The Big Moon are the latest acts heading to the south Devon countryside for the county’s biggest music event this summer.

New trade waste scheme creates cleaner city

Exeter BID has launched a new trade waste scheme which aims to reduce costs on refuse, recycling, glass and food waste collections for levy payers.

The scheme is the latest in a series of initiatives introduced by Exeter BID to help the city centre to continue to thrive and be a welcoming place for businesses, visitors and residents. Stallholders are wanted for the Beacon Heath Summer Fete on Saturday June 24 - 12noon until 3pm at St James School.

Suspect package detonated in Exeter city centre

Dozens of people were evacuated from pubs and clubs after a suspect package was found near the junction of Fore Street and High Street in Exeter.

The alarm was raised after a rucksack was spotted near the Chevalier at 11.30pm on Monday night (29 May).

Police officers attended the area and inspected the rucksack, which had been abandoned in the corner of a bus stop.

Armed response sergeant Harry Tangye tweeted: "Sus package in Exeter city centre therefore Fore At, South St, North St closed. Log 1100 29th ARVs on cordons. Please find alternative route."

FoodCycle Exeter serves 1,000 meals

FoodCycle Exeter, a project which serves community meals made from surplus food has reached a significant milestone: 1,000 meals in just over a year. The project, which has grown from strength to strength, has served over 1,000 three-course meals every Tuesday night since March 2016 in Wonford Community Centre. In the last year, the volunteer team has saved over a tonne of food from going in the bin and instead used it to cook and serve 1,000 meals as well as give away over 350 parcels of food for guests to take home. Thousands of Exeter Chiefs fans lined the streets of the City Centre today to welcome home their heroes after they claimed the Aviva Premiership title for the first time in the club’s history.

How local hero Marcus Hutchins was able to stop the NHS cyber attack

The cyber attack that affected much of the NHS' services in the middle of May was halted by a local North Devon man.

22-year-old Marcus Hutchins became famous overnight after he accidentally stopped the attack by activating an in-built "kill switch".

Hutchins, who works for an American cybersecurity firm from his home in Ilfracombe and grew up locally, is credited with stopping the spread of the virus. The young computer whizz kid has been acclaimed on social media as an 'accidental hero'.

Police are concerned about missing person Dex Johnston aged 24yrs, 5'8'' tall medium build with short dark hair and a full beard, wearing white t-shirt with large black motif. He was wearing khaki shorts and dark vans footwear.

Dex was last seen at Exe Bridge in Exeter near to Alphington Road at 01:02hrs on 28th May.

A kitchen takeover at The Volunteer Inn in Ottery St Mary will see three well-known guest chefs cooking up a storm during June and July.

Pub owners Mike and Jacqui Down are travelling to New Zealand to visit their rugby-playing son for six weeks. Haydon, who has played for Sidmouth Rugby, is on an extended visit to the country with Eden Rugby Club in Auckland.
