Virgin Media expands broadband network in Devon

Virgin Media today announced that homes and businesses in Devon will be next to benefit from an ultrafast broadband and entertainment boost.

As part of its Project Lightning expansion, Virgin Media plans to extend its fibre optic network to 42,000 homes and businesses across Devon. Work has already begun in Torquay to connect almost 24,000 new premises and is expected to be completed across the county before the end of 2019.

County Council sets out highway maintenance programme

Devon County Council’s Cabinet has approved the authority’s programme of highway maintenance for the financial year.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has awarded the Council £51.4 million for its capital budget in 2017/18. This includes allocations from the Pothole Action Fund, National Productivity Investment Fund, Incentive Fund and Challenge Fund, which will be used for planned structural maintenance on Devon’s 8,000 miles of roads - the biggest highway network of any authority in the country.

Two in five SW GPs to “quit within five years”

Around two in every five GPs in the South West have said they intend to quit within the next five years, exposing the magnitude of the region’s impending healthcare crisis suggesting that the picture for the UK may be particularly challenging.

The University of Exeter’s recent largescale survey of GPs across the region also found that seven out of ten GPs intend to change their working patterns in a way that would mean less contact with patients. This included leaving patient care, taking a career break, or reducing their hours.

Novomatic confirms record revenue in 2016

Novomatic has released their financial records for the year ending 2016, and those records confirm that the company’s income increased by a 10% which equates to around €2.3bn. On the other hand, the gaming company also increased their headcount, and is now standing at 23,500.

Three appliances from Newton Abbot and Torquay stations were mobilised to reports of a fire involving a gas canister at a domestic property in Kingsteignton.

Crews found a fire in the integral garage that had spread to the ground floor of the property, so set to work using four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets.

The incident took place in Calvados Park, Kingsteigntonat 20.50pm yesterday (April 11).

Community projects in Exeter could receive a cash injection thanks to Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch the monthly roll-out of its funding scheme, which sees grants of up to £4,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects. Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £28.5 million to more than 4000 projects up and down the UK and the supermarket is now calling on community groups in Exeter to put themselves forward for a grant. East Devon District Council’s Development Management Committee has given the green light to move forward with proposals to revitalise Exmouth seafront.

The district council, who are the landowners at Queen’s Drive, already has outline planning permission to develop the area for leisure facilities. It’s latest application - called ‘Reserved Matters’ – concerned the scale, access, appearance and landscaping of the site which was approved by councillors by ten votes to four.
