The completion of flood defence works in Teignmouth has been delayed until September after additional essential repair work was identified to tackle erosion under the sea wall.

Teignbridge has needed to reschedule the end date of the vital works to deal with voids found underneath the structure and ensure its ongoing integrity.

As well as being a popular place to walk, the sea wall – built in the 1930s - provides vital coastal flood protection for up to 400 homes and businesses in Teignmouth and protects Shaldon from the impact of wave action. It has withstood the elements...

Exeter shoppers were delighted when double Olympic gold medallist, James Cracknell OBE, ran through Exeter’s City Centre to raise awareness of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) being a chosen charity of Exeter’s Great West Run.

Owner of Exeter’s Great West Run, James led a pack of runners and supporters of the charity through a small race through the City centre on Friday 30 June, before crossing an inflatable ‘Finish Line’ in Princesshay.

The event was to raise awareness of CHSW involvement in the Great West Run and to encourage runners to either take a charity place or...

Head or Heart? Which is the Most Sensible Route to Financial Investment

It’s over 30 years since Margaret Thatcher announced that her aim was to create a country “where owning shares is as common as having car”. As the chart shows, in 2014 only 14% of people surveyed by the British Bankers Association said they held shares, while in the most recent figures released by the Office of National Statistics it was found that only 12% of quoted UK shares were owned by individuals. Admittedly, this was up from the all-time low of 10% reported in 2010 and 2012. However, it hardly measures up to the Iron Lady’s dream.

There are a number of theories...

Specialist restoration work to the Ten Commandment Stones monument on Buckland Beacon has just been completed. The work was carried out in two phases by Bath-based conservator and lettering expert Iain Cotton.

The first phase, completed in late May, saw the stones cleaned and wrapped in preparation for the restoration work to commence. The second phase of the process saw further careful cleaning before some of the lettering was re-carved to bring it back to legibility. Finally, the lettering was painted with a specially designed black paint suitable for use at high altitude and...

A rare pair of RSPB red-listed pied flycatchers have been spotted by thrilled bird watchers making their home in specially made bird boxes. The birds have been nesting near the bird hide at the National Trust’s Lydford Gorge on Dartmoor. Migrating from sub-Saharan Africa, usually in the Congo basin, the pied flycatchers move to the coast of West Africa in the spring, before returning to the UK. It’s believed the pair has adopted a nest at Lydford due to work done by National Trust ranger’s to manage the habitat for them. The birds tend to like mature woodland, similar to that at Lydford...
