Teacher training courses at the University of Exeter have been ranked as among the best in the country.

The Graduate School of Education has been named in third place in a new league table of university providers of initial teacher training in the Good Teacher Training Guide 2017.

This is the latest accolade for the city’s PGCE courses, which train the brightest people in the country to teach in primary and secondary schools. Courses are graded as outstanding by Ofsted, the education inspectorate, and approximately 90 per cent of those achieving qualified teacher status...

Call for people in Devon to Walk All Over Cancer

PEOPLE across Devon are being invited to take on Cancer Research UK’s latest fundraising challenge, Walk All Over Cancer, to help beat cancer sooner.

The charity is calling on men and women to sign up now to walk 10,000 steps every day throughout the month of June and raise money through sponsorship.

Based on the average person’s strides, 10,000 steps equates to approximately five miles or eight kilometres per day, and adopting small lifestyle changes can go a long way in making the goal feel achievable.

Cranbrook school children are helping to make Cranbrook a Healthy Town by joining new brushing clubs at Cranbrook Education Campus.

Brushing clubs are being welcomed by the school, to reduce tooth decay and raise awareness of dental hygiene among children. They are happening in reception classes at the school, lasting for 5 minutes on a daily basis.

The Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink opened its doors at 10am this morning. With over 100 producers exhibiting over the next three days there is plenty for visitors to sample and enjoy!

The festival is running today, tomorrow and Bank Holiday Monday at Northernhay Gardens and Exeter Castle.

Tonight’s After Dark Music Festival in Exeter Castle’s Courtyard starts at 6pm. Headliners Leigh Coleman Band will be joined by Celine Dos Santos, Yazzy and Joanna Cooke. Tickets are available on the gate.

Nominations deadline extended for Community Transport Awards

The deadline for nominations for this year’s Community Transport Awards has been extended.

The awards ceremony is open to anyone working or volunteering in the community transport sector and Devon County Council has announced that nominations must now be submitted by Monday 8 May.

There are three categories of awards which honour the exceptional work of staff and volunteers in Devon’s Community Transport services:

£20,000 boost for Killerton roof repairs

Killerton House, near Exeter, has received a major £20,000 boost towards their overall fundraising target of £100,000 to plug the gaps in its leaking roof. Viridor Credits Environmental Company has awarded a grant via the Landfill Communities Fund to help to bring the historic roof scape back to life.

Gold Mayoral chain stolen in Budleigh burglary

Police investigating a burglary at the Public Hall, Budleigh Salterton, have confirmed that a ceremonial gold chain (pictured) has been stolen.

The incident happened between 10.15pm on Wednesday 19th April 2017 and 10.50am the next day.

The front door of the building was forced and an untidy search of the building was made, with cupboards opened and further damage caused to internal doors.
