Nello cyclists have special reasons for taking part

FORCE Cancer Charity’s largest annual fundraiser – The Nello bike ride – is less than two months away and cyclists from across Devon and around the country are gearing up for the big day on Sunday June 28.

Since the first Nello Century Cycle Challenge in 2000, the ride has raised £1.5million for Exeter-based FORCE, which works locally to support anyone affected by cancer, face-to-face and close to home.

The charity has set a target of raising £127,500 from Nello 2026 to meet the increasing demand for its unique services.

Red ribbon opening for Mamhead’s £1.5 million slipway

Exmouth’s new £1.5 million Mamhead Slipway has been officially opened, restoring the vital maritime access to the town’s wonderful waterside after an absence of more than four years.

Larger and more practical than the previous structure, the new slipway on the River Exe reinstates the town’s maritime leisure tradition and will bring more business to the town. The majority of the work was funded by East Devon District Council with Devon County Council putting £275,000 in to the project.

Killerton Estate in Devon walked away with the top Overall Drinks Award at the National Trust’s annual Fine Farm Produce Awards, presented at BBC Countryfile Live in the grounds of Blenheim Palace. Wildlife set to increase on the Maer

Following advice from the East Devon District Council Countryside team, the grassland on the Maer Local Nature Reserve in Exmouth will be cut less regularly in order to increase the wildlife and biodiversity on the site.

Researchers from the University of Exeter have pioneered a new technique to control high frequency sound waves, commonly found within everyday devices such as mobile phones.

The research team, led by Professor Geoff Nash from the University of Exeter, have created a new structure that can manipulate the extreme frequency sound waves – also known as surface acoustic waves or ‘nanoquakes’ , as they run across the surface of a solid material in a similar manner to earthquake tremors on land.

Until his retirement in 2000, Dr Hall was a GP in Shebbear and held a post at the University of Sussex, before becoming a senior lecturer at the Department of General Practice, Exeter University. His work there was largely involved with GP training (for which the Exeter Department was nationally renowned), screening for diabetic retinopathy and practice organisation. Dozens of trainees have started an exciting new pilot programme in hospitals and care homes across Devon, training in a new role to become Nursing Associates. Devon was selected as one of 11 pilot sites nationally and the only one in the south to develop the role. Council Leader calls for urgent meeting to discuss Exeter’s transport issues

A council leader has called for an emergency meeting to discuss transport issues in Exeter after the city’s roads ground to a halt this week following a road traffic incident.

Exeter City Council Leader Pete Edwards has written to Devon County Council, the Police, Highways England, and Exeter Chamber of Trade and Commerce, calling for an urgent meeting to thrash out the problems.

Pedestrian in critical condition after A30 lorry crash

Police and ambulance were called at 3.05am today [4 August] following a serious collision on the westbound carriageway of the A30 at Daisy Mount Cross, Ottery St Mary.

The collision involved a male pedestrian and an HGV.

The 19-year-old man, from Hampshire, was walking along the carriageway with three other men when he was in collision with the HGV.

He sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital before being transferred to Derriford Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Work on a new £5.7 million junction off the A361 near Tiverton is due to start next month (September).
