Exeter ranked move-friendly city

Exeter has been named one of the UK’s least stressful cities to move to, thanks to strong infrastructure, good housing availability, and ease of access to short-term services.

In a new national study released by Pay Less for Storage, Exeter scored 74 out of 100 in the “move-friendliness” index, ranking joint 10th alongside Inverness, Lancaster and Ripon. The research measured practical relocation challenges like van hire access, local self-storage options, chain-free housing stock, and the availability of short-term rentals.

“It was thoroughly well deserved,” said the Maynard School’s Head of Computing, Laura Burt, of the robotics team winning the UK’s only trophy at the FIRST LEGO League Open European Championship in Aarhus, Denmark over the weekend of 27-28 May 2017.

With 50 countries represented from across the world and a total of 118 teams, only five of whom were representing the UK, the Maynard Wine Gums was the sole all-girls’ team from Europe and just one of only two in the entire competition.

Aimed at 9-16-year olds, the teams had to build a robot to tackle a series of missions, each...

Ancient Devon community had a taste for exotic food and drink

Devon farmers who made their home in the same remote location for 1,200 years had a taste for exotic imported food and drink, archaeologists have found.

There was a thriving settlement in Ipplepen, South Devon, for hundreds of years longer than previously thought, excavations have shown.

It was originally thought that people only lived on the site during the Roman period, but radiocarbon analysis now shows the settlement was founded in the middle of the pre-Roman Iron Age - the 4th century BC. It was only finally abandoned in the 8th century AD, possibly because of the...

To launch this event, Steve from The Deer Park collected Hospiscare patient Brian Mills and his Volunteer Care Navigator David Woodward, treating them both to a trip in one of the hotel’s classic cars, a Packard V12. Brian, a keen car enthusiast, thoroughly enjoyed the journey which was followed by tea and cake with his family at The Deer Park.

Brian’s daughter speaks movingly about her...

It seems the on-field success of the Exeter Chiefs is helping boost visitor and booking numbers off it with demand and attendance figures at Sandy Park having increased in recent weeks following the club’s major success at Twickenham.

Less than a month after Rob Baxter’s side lifted English rugby’s top prize for the first time in the club’s history, so companies and organisations are looking to make the most of staging their events at the home of the newly-crowned Premiership Rugby champions.

The fantastic sunny weekend we have just experienced here in the south west has seen thousands of people enjoying the outdoors and all that it has to offer. But whilst this weather provides a welcome boost to the local economy, the selfish behaviour of some people can potentially put people’s lives at risk.

At Spitchwick and Deeper Marsh cattle grid gateways were blocked and vehicles were parked on narrow roads blocking access for farm vehicles and emergency vehicles. The situation was repeated right across the National Park at popular locations.

A 10-year mission to honour those who have given their lives fighting for their country has finally been realised by Cullompton resident David Godfrey, after adding the final touches this week to the memorial garden he masterminded.

A woodfuel arrived today at the memorial gardens – next to the Hayridge Centre in Cullompton – to deliver three tonnes of woodchip, which is the last detail before the garden has its official launch next week.

The woodchip was donated and delivered free-of-charge by local woodfuel distributor Forest Fuels, which has its HQ in Okehampton....

The incredible lives of people in a rural African community who speak a minimum of six languages will be showcased in Exeter this week.

There are five households in the tiny village of Agnack in Senegal but everyone is multilingual, despite the fact few have been educated formally.

The families live near several important African rivers, so have learnt languages by talking with people from other parts of the continent and elsewhere who travel to the area. They always marry someone from neighboring Guinea Bissau, which also brings new languages into the community. There is a...

La La Land highlight of Exeter's Big Screen in the Park

The official ticket launch for one of Exeter’s most anticipated summer events kicked off in Princesshay with a surprise flashmob of lindy hop dancers.

In fitting with one of this year’s film highlights, multiple Oscar-winning blockbuster La La Land, this dance celebration in the sunshine aptly marked Exeter Phoenix’s launch of Big Screen 2017 tickets going on sale. Crowds of Saturday shoppers gathered to watch as members of the South West Lindyhoppers dressed in yellow appeared from nowhere and strutted their stuff to the song ‘T'aint What You Do (It's The Way That Cha Do It)’ by...
